Here is a basic outline of what we are attempting to do on the Outside Zone... Please share your thoughts or ideas..
> We are about 90% I formation, a little one back in long yardage. We run a very minimalistic offense.. inside zone, stretch and Power are the majority of our run offense. We have a double dive belly play we run about 5 times a game. A Scat that is basically the Stretch with a toss only when we are getting penetration around the TE area and a Trap and Zone for the Fullback. Some years we will run the Counter, but except for a reverse now and then this is it. The Zone stuff gets the majority of our practice time.
> Passing wise about 80% Sprint Out, 15% Waggles off the Zone and 5% Quick and 5step. We love the Sprint out for is shorter throws, less pressure and more difficulty to cover.

Outside Zone/Stretch
Back is aiming at 1yd outside of TE and 2 yds deep. We want to cut north/south on stretch is someone gets in his path. The Defense is running on stretch and he will get pee-owed if he cuts back.
We are trying to hook lineman and cut or position lbers on the stretch... the zone is our cutback play.
On the Outside Zone/Stretch our Covered Guy is Stepping so that his earhole goes thru the armpit of the downlineman. If the downlineman is wide that may require a big Bucket, while an inside shade may require the covered lineman to fire straight off the ball, 2nd step is thru the Crotch, 3rd step must be past the feet of the DL if you are going to get him hooked. He will stay on the Downlineman until an uncovered tells him to go.
The Stretch is a much wider landmark and requires the bucket(deep drop step)
Uncovered Lineman Drop steps to aim at the hip of the next playside Lineman, if by the 3rd step you have not overtaken your next OL then work on that angle to Lber level. If you do overtake the next lineman, physically knock him off the block and tell him to go. We teach the covered to dip, and rip to get under the pads of the defender
The uncoverd looks atLber as he piggyback and feels the hip of the next lineman, the uncovered has him on a run thru.... that is why we use 2 signals for the covered guy to come off...the push and the go,go,go.
we also will scheme block the stretch... G vs wide 9 that is penetrating, Man and Pull for deep fast scrape lber...
The bounce play is basically a stretch that starts on a tighter angle to get the Playside Lbers to step up and give the OL time to seal him when the rb bounces outside. We don't call it a different play, we just tell the QB and RB when we are having trouble with the playside lber, that they should bounce the stretch.
