Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I'm new to zone blocking, though Coach C. has guided me through the concepts, techniques and such. Here's a question on a fine point concerning blockers' first steps: let's say PSG is covered by a DT head-up. The POA is the outside of OG's hip through B Gap. C is uncovered, so he'll combo with OG (say that OT is releasing to a PSB). On his first step, does OG take a lateral step playside to make room for Center (thus, stepping away from his help)?
Now, say OG is covered by an outside shade, so he'll combo with OT--what are the first steps here? I assume OT will simply first-step backside to get a piece of DT--does OG just step up here? I know Coach C. teaches a lateral (L) step when a vertical push is on--say, OG and OT combo a guy in the gap between them, as I understand it, each takes an L step to the mid-point of the defender, join at the hips (HIPPO) then vertical push upfield. What about the first step in the other cases I described?
Are all steps flat, L steps, or an angled zone step?

Steve the L-step is on this closes the door to the combo defender (3 tech.) then you start to push to the playside backer or you can take your push backside pushing the down defender to the backside LBer. Vs 2 tech what you will get is almost a triple team because you now have a guard and tackle that helps with the tech. The center and tackle heps the guard with a hand check. The first step is flat not angled, this tends to throw there hips away from each other allowing the down defender to split the combo. Follow the illustrations in my manual and you will have no problems. Coach CAmpbell
Many thanks. If I read you right, because of the potential for the down defender to split the combo where an angle step is used, you would coach the "L" step on al combos? Steve
Thanks for the clarification. My kids--12 year olds--will be running basically three plays: Inside Veer, Midline, and Load. As I understand it, all three are inside/slow zone plays (I could, of course, be mistaken in my ignorance here), so the point of delivery is at the Guard's outside hip. Any effect on the footwork here, or just lateral/L step? Thanks.
