Fronts are alerted by a two digit system with a tag alert behind the last digit. A base forty front with two outside inverts is known as a 31 front cover 3, if you wanted to go to a reduced 50 front with shades it would be known as a 13 tight front. The first digit tells the call side tackle where to align and the second digit the backside tackle away from the call to align. If any of you coaches would like to take this further I will be glad to help. Coach CAmpbell
How do you call it if you want the left DT in a 1 and the Right DT in a 3. We declare it be strength but we call it ONE and THREE if we want to work left to right. Do you use a better or different method.
Coach using coach campbell's system the first number always tells the strong side tackle where to line up, it does not matter on left or right. vs. a pro right (TE & FL to defenses left) if you wanted your LT in a one tech, you would call 13, 12, etc. The #1 tells the strong side tackle to line up in a one tech.

Coach F has put it correctly, with the 31 front you get an automatic 7 tech towards the Tight end with a backside 5 tech away from the call. If you get two double tights to the 31 front then the rover on the backside walks up and plays a loose 9 tech. Another example is a 13 tight look - this gives you a 1 tech on the callside to the center with a backside 3 and 5 tech. Because you tagged the alert word tight to the defensive front call this gives you a frontside 5 and a 9. Would look forward to discussing this call further. Coach CAmpbell
we make our defensive calls with a 3 digit number, such as 631. after the strength call is made we line up in in the tech's that are called with our end in a tight align if there is a 1 and a wide aling with a 3 next to him. the reason i like this so much is beacuse you can call anything you want and dont have to give names to it. coach krell
I use the same system as Coach Campbell, strong side DT followed by weakside DT. Our guys have taken to it very well, and do a good job of visualsing the front, and therefore where they should be, by the digits and name, ie 13 Under Tight/31 Over Wide etc.
Do any of you guys use wrist bands instead of huddle calls? I have seen a few coaches who send in numbers, that tell each kid where to line up via a wristband , and they say it takes the emphasis of remembering alignments and allows them to play more freely. I'm not totally convinced myself, because I expect my ILB and OLB to be able to realign a player in the wrong technique, and hence they must know the entire Defense.
Saying that, I'm always willing to learn and be shown a better way or another way. I don't know enough to say if anything is right or wrong!
Any thoughts?
