COaches, I have a dilemma. I recently interviewed for a HC job at the high school I am currently at. We have been without a head coach since january. I have been the interim coach. We have done a great job saving a "sinking ship". Unfortunately, the admin hasn't taken much notice. THey still wanted to go through with the interview process. The kids, the faculty, and some administrators want to hire me. However the principal, for whatever reason, is playing it real close to his vest. I have worked really hard to get this program righted, but I have a feeling they may hire someone else. I have put in a hard 3 months, but I am afraid that doesn't matter to him. THey said they are not going to make a decision until the week of Mar 22-26 at the earliest. My feeling is to look in another direction, and see what is out there. I have 4 years college experience and 4 years of HS experience. I don't want to give up on this job, but I also don't want to put all my eggs in one basket. WHat do you guys think?
i would look elsewhere, and if something good opens up, take a shot. it's tough to put in a lot of time, then have it all yanked out from underneath you. but, that's part of the profession. the people in charge of those things are usually the ones who know the least about it.
who knows, you may also get the job at the school you're already at. plus, working this hard to earn the job has probably made you a better coach, and better prepared for your next job, no matter where it is.
Coach, I would stick with it. Like DC29 said, you'll still be a better coach for it. Besides, sticking it out whether you get the job or not will still benefit the kids, and that's why do this.
I've seen similar situations at other high schools, and although we (coaches) put naming a new Head Coach as an urgent issue, many principals do not look at it as a priority unless there is a game next week.
Oh, yeah. Stick with it, and hope it happens. Nobody really needs to know you're looking elsewhere, just in case. I wouldn't back off at all with what you're doing. That can and probably will help you where you're at.
If there's a chance you'll stay on staff, then you really are working as a great team member, whether head coach or not.
But, if it's head coach or no coaching, is that something you're willing to do next fall?
Lots to think about. I hope it works out well for you.
