Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We run a multiple 40 defense. To the strong side we play our DE in a 7 tech, DT in a 3 tech, our weakside tackle will be in a 2i, weakside end will be in a 5 tech. Our WSLB will be in a 9 tech. Will LB will play outside leg of the guard and Mike LB will play inside leg of the guard with our Sam LB 4 yards deep 1 yard outside the WB. My question is how can we adjust to the double wing formation out of our base defense to make us more effective. Do we need to balance up in a 33 look and play both ends in a 7 tech with our OLBs 1 yard outside the WB? Thanks for the help.
hope you haven't played too many games against the DW yet. The key to trying to stop this offense is to understand how it works. The backers and secondary can not watch the backs or they will become totally lost because the play can often look like it's going to one of two or three backs. Also, how do you line up to a strong side with the balanced formation? I think you line up balanced also and play it that way because the counter play potential is devastating.
When the offense is in it's base look, i.e., two tight wingbacks, one back (FB) behind the QB, line up with the guards in a 3 tech, ends in 6 tech. Inside backers directly behind the guards, outside backers on outside shoulder of wing back. This offense works by starting with a double team of one of your D line. This man will stay blocked unless he is a superior athlete, however, he is the key to stopping the play. Simply put, this player can't get blown back off the LOS. If he has to crawl with his face in the dirt, fine, just muck up the hole. I think I have an article about stopping this offense with read keys for the backers and secondary, as well as line play. If your still interested, I'll try to find it and forward it to you.
We just faced off against an in-town rival that I have to say ran the DW to perfection! Defensively, had we not shut them down, we would have lost easily.....
Going into the game, we run a 4-2-5 (in a 'G' scheme looking like a Wide Tackle 6) and played our DL in; R - 6i hard charging to C T - 3 - 2 hard charging to A N - 2i hard charging to A E- 6i hard charging to C
This was supposed to allow our to inside guys (Mike & Sam to fill B uncontested)....
Unfortunately, during the game our end was flying to outside of the WING(!) which my guy in the box didn't relay to me (they were murdering us on the FB dive) so we adjusted on the fly....and
R - 6i hard charging to B (he was the better athlete) T - 2 hard charging to A N - 2i hard charging to A (small kid, but tore up A gap, usually taking C and G with him..caused 2 fumbles) E - 5 hard charging to B
this allowed our ILB to remain covered, and scrape hard outside.
then stacked our backers over the linemen....daring them to beat us outside We played C3 the whole time, cheating our FS to 10yds). They didn't get a first down after that!
Coach we are playing a double tight double wing team this week, we run a multiple 40 and can easily adjust to the ways you talked about. This team likes to throw the ball also but the most they ever spread it out is moving one TE to a flanker. We are a much better cover 0 (man) team than we are zone, any suggestions on what we should do coverage wise, and also if you have that info on what the backers do I would really like to see it. Athletically we match up with this team and I am just looking for some insite on a better way to defend them. Our base defense is a 31 Cov 0.
