I know that this has been talked about on the board somewhere, but could use some imput. What are some questions that are asked when interviewing an assistant coach? (Position coach not a coordinator) The AD is the HC. I've been through the process before, but not in the high school setting.
Those of you that are HC's, what is your interview process and what are you looking for / asking in each interview? When you have 2 guys you like, what criteria do you use to separate them?
Also, what are some questions that I should be asking them? I have a solid list of things I want to know, but want to make sure I'm not overlooking important details.
I am not a HC. I was in a similar situation as yourself earlier this year. There is a lot of good information on this topic in the archives. I got some good advice from some of the good folks on this board when I emailed them my questions. I was told that my football knowledge was the last thing the HC would want to know at the interview for an assitance coaching position, and don't go in trying to impress them with football knowledge.
With this in mind, I contacted the best coach in my area and asked to meet with him, and it was the #1 school I wanted to coach at. At the interview he wanted to know if I realized how much time was involved, and if I was willing to put the time in. Then he took me up to his office, gave me a pen, and asked me to basically show him what I knew on the whiteboard. Go figure. At the end of the interview I was invited on staff. I think you should be prepared for just about anything. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info. I was put under fire for the majority of a day for the last job that I worked at where I had an actual interview (college). Anywhere from philosophy to X and O. I think that I'm well prepared going into it, having had that experience and knowing what the time committment is. You give good advice! I have learned from past experiences of being interviewed and also being on a staff interviewing a candidate to be prepared for ANYthing. Thanks for your help.

Loyalty and the ability to want to work and chase the same dream is what i want in an assistant coach. I can help along with my other coaches to teach the X's and O's but loytalty and the desire to go to the next level is the kind of coaches I would want to hire on my staff. Coach Campbell
