Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
just for fun today, one of my players and i figured out how many different things we could do out of this defense (no, i don't teach math, but after this exercise, i should add it to my resume).
what we do is basically teach our d-linemen 3 different techniques. slant left, slant right, and a "bull rush".
we teach our 3 linebackers blitz left, blitz right, and read (when other backers are bliting).
we teach our stingers to come hard to the mesh point, play a 50 front end, and slide into a blitz in c gap.
that's 6,561 different combinations of things that can be done from this defense.
now, if you want to, you can add a couple of different things for the stingers as far as coverage or lining up different against different formations, but i think you get the gist.
obviously, there are a lot of reads we do while doing some of things but...................
You can add "geometry" to that also. Not only do the outside inverts, what most are calling "spurs" use angles after reading the end man on the line of scrimmage, but all of the players use geometry in pursuit.
I recognize that you "math" comment was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but it truly is accurate. I think your players get excited about all of the combinations that they learn. Also, in some small way, I really think that it gives the players some added confidence.

Well, try taking that number and multiplying it by 27 or 81. Just got the new JC manual, and there's a few more things you can do with each guy. We'll probably try to limit it to less than 83,000 though......

Our defensive philosophy is largely based on 3 tenets:
1) STOP THE RUN! The teams that we play in our league predicate everything off of the success of their run game. The run includes screens and flat routes as well.
2) LIMIT THE BIG PLAY (20-25 YARDS): If we are successful at stopping the run, it makes the opponent more predictable in down and distance situations.
3) WIN THE TAKEAWAY BATTLE: We MUST take care of the football and we MUST force turnovers. If we win that battle, we will put ourselves in great position to win the football game.
We focus on tackling in space EVERY DAY and start our tackling drills with intensity drives. As we all know, defense is about ATTITUDE. You gotta be a BAD MAN when you are on the field. Using your hands, taking proper angles and most importantly, SWARMING TO THE BALL!
I like the traditional Chasing Rabbit pursuit drill, but we do it a little differently. We set up our fronts and coverages that we will be using for the week against the formations and tendencies that we will face that particular week. On go, our linemen attack their gaps and chase down the back (as he gets the alley and heads up the sideline). The linebackers will do an up-down and then join the pursuit taking the proper angle to touch the back. Finally our secondary players will take read steps and then take their angles to touch the back. We mix up reads and calls as we go. It is a great drill to not only train the instincts of you players, but it is a great conditioner too!
