I'm from the "old school" I guess when it comes to teaching linebackers, but after reading the "40 Nickel Defense" by Jeff Walker, and with the retention / discipline / dilligence of today's athletes I'm trying to decide if combining the two linebacker read progressions to better educate the ILB in post snap reads.
I was of the mind of heavy reading of guards, but in playing a multiple 40 defense, this can provide "gray" reads for some kids and cause hesitation.
The 'simple' method taught by Walker is to quarantine the areas as "in", "at", "away" and "other". This method is based off of a primary back read and then -possibly- any 'counter' read of a pulling guard, booting qb, etc. My backers have had no problems running after ball carriers, unfortunately we are in a wing-t heavy league and you know what happens then. Teaching them guard reads has been frustrating for them (and myself).
I plan on teaching the kids the 'simple' way first, then progress in more guard heavy reads and the like - would this be (time) practical? (I'm sure it would be beneficial)
