Coaches, What are some things that you do to work on your kick off coverages: How do you align on kickoffs? What are the responsibilities of each player?... I need some help Thank you
There are a few things that I have seen work well--but the most important thing that I've seen in kickoff coverage is personnel. You need to have good athletes who absolutely love to hit and would be willing to run head-first into a brick wall if you ask them. If you have a player who is a full-time kicker only, you might want to work on corner kicks. This is an excellent technique if you have a player who can devote the time to practicing his placement--it really will shrink the field for the return. I teach my players to always keep the return man on thier inside shoulder, and never avoid a block outside. This keeps them in the right relation to the returner, and should keep them in their lanes.
Coach, we put five guys on each side. The guys closest to the sideline are in charge of killing the ballcarrier. The second guy in from the sideline run up the sideline and have contain. Everyone else is a lane guy. The kicker is the safety. We are a directional kicking team, and we kick the ball either left or right. We did not give up one return for a touchdown last year. I hope this helps.

Coach, We have an agressive in your face style of kick off coverage. Not that no one else doesn't but we are attempting to cause a turn over or momentum change every kick off. Traditionally your outside men on each side are the contain men but we call them Strikers, They run straight to the ball. These guys will be two of the fastest and more aggressive guys on the team. The next guy in will assume the contain men. Our philosophy is to get an agle on the returner so we can make the big hit or cause a turn over. Oue next two guys down the line will remain in their lanes keeping the returner to their inside. We then have our Gunners. These positions are alligned on each side of the kicker. These guys will be your big hitters, the head hunters on the team and they should be able to run too. Their job is to make the tackle,They must get to the ball.
Before the ball is kicked we align in a staggered allignment. Strikers are 1's Gunners are 5's
1 3 5 K 5 3 1 2 4 4 2
Hope this helps Isaacs@AOL.com
High school coach wanting to gain as much info on as many topics as possible because I hope to be a head coach in the near future and I want to be a nationally known name one day
We align our front, five to each side. Our gunners(outside speedsters) go to the ball! The next man on each side has contain responsibility, moves up field on the kick and loops behind gunner to a depth not to exceed 3 yards from the side line, before coming abreast of the football. As he does this he is permitted to drift SLOWLY inside a few yards keeping abreast of the ball, EVER MINDFUL OF THE REVERSE COMING BACK TO HIS SIDE. The third man in on each side are our slobberknocker producers! The 4th and 5th man on each side are our wedge busters. Our kicker mirrors the ball carrier, always aware of the man whom he knows is assigned to him, and ever alert to avoid cheap shots designed to take him out! * Our gunners are aligned 5 yds. deeper than anyone else so as to precipitate a full running start without being called for offsides!*

Coaches,
We've struggled with our personnel, and have given up two scores in the last two games. Our "wedgebusters" have been on the sidelines, because most of them are offensive linemen. Our skill kids are not the kind of guys who run through walls. Am I crazy to put in my oline on kickoff, because they're the ones who are true "slobber knockers?" Of course my LB's are in there already, but I don't have 11 of them, and I need 11 warriors on this team. Your thoughts greatly appreciated.
Coach, Having been a Head Coach for a long, long time now, I decided many years ago to put my BEST ELEVEN ATHLETES ON BOTH THE KICK OFF AND KICK RETURN TEAMS! No matter where they start on offense or defense, if they are one of the best 11, they hit the field. My only exception to that is the starting QB and to be honest with you, I have even put him out there if the situation called for everything we had! If your line is in shape, and are not going to die on you from the added burden of special team duty, I would not hesitate for a second to put them out there! Just one coach's opinion. Are you making your contain men maintain their responsibility? A re they coming up the middle,or running the perimeters? If it is the latter, be sure and check those contain guys on the film and see if they are doing their jobs. It will surprise you sometimes to see that they are not!

We then give 1's outside contain, 2's Head Hunter, 3's Numbers, 4's Hashmarks and 5's Wedge Busters.
This makes it east when coaching because I'm not constantly trying to remember which two number go together (if we numbered 1 thru 10 I'd be pairing up 1 & 10, 2 & 9 etc)
Our way it's just 3's control the numbers.
We do NOT say 'keep in your lanes' Our experience is it makes things too rigid and just helps the return team pick up their blocks.
Instead we snake down the field but have a mind on areas of responsibility.
I have actually found it useful to give the #3 on the far side of the field carte blanche to 'monster' wherever he wants. He starts by running along the line of kick off team and chooses his own point to cross the LOS at the kick. This guys is my quickest and most aggressive DB. Stats show that he doesn't make the most tackles throughout the season but he does draw blockers and that creates gaps for othe guys to attack.
We then score return yardage by field position.
Inside their 10 =10 Points Between their 10 and 20 = 5 Points Between their 20 and 25 = 1 Point Between their 25 and halfway = 0 points and In our half = minus 10
We give these scores out at mid week when reviewing film and stickers are awarded when the team reaches an average of 5 + Points per game. Our season average was 7.something. (10 regular season and 2 Play-Off games.
It concentrates the mind.
I hope tihs helps and good luck.
