How would you as head football coaches respond to an AD that tells you "You can't have a meeting with your kids during homeroom because football is not in-season and it's not mandatory for them to attend weights"?
I teach at the Middle school and our participation in the weight room has been down so I wanted to have a team meeting.
Coach, With spring sports now in season I'm sure an after school meeting maybe difficult to pull off. I would suggest two things... 1. Type up a letter and have one for evey player sent to their respective homerooms. Put on their your feelings about weight lifting attendence and also something about goals for this season.
2. Have an assistant coach make it a point to go to all the lunchs one day and meet with the players and discuss the weight room attendence. It doesn't have to be a teacher, just an assistant on staff. Make your players sign-in with an email address when they speak to the coach during lunch as an accountability thing and here again you can follow-up with a letter with your off-season overview or your comments for the team.
These are some thing I do to motivate kids. They don't all work, but if if works for one it was successful. I am experiencing some of the same problems here at school.
-I type up a newsletter once a month and e-mail it to parents and make copies for the player. On here I include weight room attendance and any player who is making big gains etc.
-we have morning weight room hours 6:30-7:30. I have one kid on each team (Baseball, Track, Lacrosse) attempt to motivate other players on his team to lift. We get about 10 kids a morning and will get 15 to 20 on Friday mornings for our circuit training work-out.
-I will type up letters and invite kids to lift weights Friday mornings. They will earn a t-shirt based on attendance. If they miss to many day I will take the t-shirt back. After we train hard for 45 minutes and then walk the halls, hopefully it becomes contagious. I am hoping I will have kids and parents asking why was I not invited??? Then I talk about committment (I'll let you know if this works)
-I call home and e-mail all the time about weight training. I walk the hall, cafe and make kids tell me they are coming to lift. Easier said then done though.
All this doesn't work all the time, but were trying. This upcoming year will be our first ever varsity football season. We are a new program and are trying to set a standard....LIFT WEIGHTS.
