Does anyone run a seam read instead of just a clear out? For example you might have a route combo where the inside guy runs a seam and the outside guy runs an out or curl or comeback or in. If you have your inside guy run a seam read where he reads the saftey he can become part of the route instead of just a clear out. What are your rules for the guy running the seam read? What if he gets man coverage?
here is how gary crowton of byu explained it to me.
limit the options the seam read has. vs a cover 1 or 3 and anyother single safety defense the seam read has a seam/in read vs a 2 safety defense it is a seam/post read. the post is spliting the 2 safeties.
If the safety is dropping, then the seam runner should curl up two steps after reading the safety's drop. We tell the seam runner that he has five steps upfield to read the safety. So those five steps plus the two steps to stop should get him 10 to 12 yards deep.
Versus man coverage we convert the route to a Switch between the SE and the motion WB (who was going to run the seam).
