Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I was just wondering how much time people dedicate to special teams at the HS level? Are you 2 platoon, or do players play both ways? What types of kids do you put on your special teams?

There are 3 equalually important aspects of football:
1. Kicking 2. Defense 3. Offense
Most teams give sufficient attention to offense and defense but tend to be negligent when it comes to the kicking game. A team which is deficient in the kicking game operates at only 66% efficiency. One out of every five plays on an average is some sort of kick. Coach CAmpbell
In order to instill some pride in our special teams, we pick a special teams player of the week. I had our Japanese teacher write out the words "Special Teams" in Japanese. I then took this to the local sporting goods provider and had them make up black t-shirts with this written on it. It is in Japanese because I want special teams players to have a "kamikaze" attitude. These shirts are a true honor, (that can only be won once per year), and the kids sell out for them. In order to judge player performance, I grade them out on a point system. For example, 2pts for a succesful block on a return. 3pts for a solo tackle. 2 pts for the first hit on a tackle. 1 pt for an assist. 1 pt for all linemen involved on PAT or punt who block their correct assignment. (-3)pts for any missed assignment. If anyone is interested in my complete scoring system, let me know, and I can email it to you.

As a Head Coach, I would definitely ideally want to hire a Special Teams coordinator but this being my first year, I will take responsibility for our kicking game.
I will divide the certain special teams up with my coaches and they will have the responsibility of that specific team. Each coach will be responsible for placing the personnel, calling them out during practice, making sure each player is on the field, each position has its backups, and pulling them together on the sideline before we run that specific special team during practice.
As a staff, we will discuss the personnel for all the different special teams. Our numbers are very low and we are very young on the roster. Many of our starters will have to play special teams but I like to look for kids who may not be starters, kids who are backups and bust their butts in practice. I like to make sure as many different kids as possible touch the field and play. On kick off and punt team, I like to have my more speedy aggressive kids like linebackers, running backs, and defensive backs who will fly down the field full speed.
Offensive Coordinator: He will be responsible for our Punt team and our PAT/ Field goal team. Both teams ride off the offense so organizing personnel for these two teams will be relatively simple for him.
Defensive Coordinator: He will be responsible for Punt Return and PAT Block. Both these teams also ride off of defense so organizing the personnel will be easy, not to mention many of our defensive guys will be on these teams.
Linebackers Coach: He will be responsible for our Kick Off Return team.
Wide Receiver: He will help coach all of our returners on KOR and PR
Running Back Coach: He will take control of our Kick Off team.
When we practice special teams we will usually have three, five-minute blocks so fifteen minutes. Every day, we will have this fifteen minute special teams period. Each day we will work with three different special teams. I expect my coaches to implement each team in a walk through fashion. We will walk through each team at a half speed pace to ensure all the kids understand where they should be and their assignment. This is very important on teams such as KOR and Punt Return. After we have gone through at a slow pace, we will do a few reps at full speed to see how it all looks.

Our philosophy for special teams: We want our special teams to an ADVANTAGE for us in the game and an OPPORTUNITY for us to make a play that could change the game. We want our special teams to play with a sound SCHEME and great EFFORT. Dominate on special teams!
For practice time, we will devote time every single day to do special teams. What ever our focus that day is what we will do. Ex: Def 3+ and the Punt Return; Def Redzone and FG Block and KR. We also on our walk thru and install days spend more time on the practice field doing special teams than O or D whereas we use those sessions as install in the meeting and film rooms those days, on Monday and Thursdays.
In years past I have been part of programs that has not had a special team coordinator on staff therefore each coach on staff was responsible to one of our special teams. The DC took over PR and KO. OC did punt and KR, and then rest were filled out accordingly. This past season and this season we do have a Special Teams coordinator. His job is to plan out everything and make cut ups on Hudl. But one thing we do ask of each assistant is that they contribute to those cuts up and investigate more detail about each special teams. For example, when scouting the opponents kick off team, the Special Team coordinator will look at how they run down the field and their tendencies. The DB coach will look at L1/L2, LB coach will look at R1-3, DL coach L3/4 and the HC will take R4-6. This allows us to get a better understanding of each position than just the overall picture of special teams. We want to show our players that special teams is a huge part of the game and by doing so we make sure that we spend time scouting and breaking down opponents accordingly.
