There is no play in football like the kick-off. The excitement level is high and anything can happen. A great hit might be coming and or perhaps a long run. The whole tone of the upcoming series or even the game may result from the kick-off. You must place a great deal of importance on this play. The kick-off team is the purest form of aggressive contact at high spee.d Pride in this group is essential a "Nickname " for this group gets alot of mileage. Coach CAmpbell
The kickoff team must have speedy athletes who love contact. You may want 2 different cover teams, based upon the return system of your opponent.
If your opponent runs a wedge type of a return, then your middle 4 cover men must be wedge-busters. They must LOVE contact. They will run full speed and demolish the wedge, taking out 1 or 2 blockers if possible. These are likely to be SS/LB/DE types.
If your opponent runs some type of assignment or crossing return, the cover men need to avoid the early block and get back into their lanes. The need to be fast.
There should be a contain man to each side, who NEVER lets anyone outside of him. There should also be a flyer to each side, who has no lane responsibility.
To be a cover man, you must be fearless, relentless and disciplined.
