Passing off the 3 tech to the center is more sound. If the center totally vacates the area you are giving more pass rush lanes and options away. I would bet that defensive coordinators will send that backer plus another type of stunt or blitz into the opposite a gap if the center leaves.

What is the technique you use for turn back? Do they stay as square as possible and kick step, or do they turn back (turn shoulders)?

Tiger One - watched the Skins practice today. Didn't get a chance to see Rod Gardner afterwards - must have been 2,000 - 3,000 people in attendance! Don't know how many games they will win, but they are EXTREMELY WELL COACHED!!!!!

Coach - with between 2 & 3 thousand people lining the field - it was hard to see anything. No field passes were issued to High School & College coaches, as in the past. EVERYBODY had to remain outside the playing field. We decided to go last PM around 9, & didn't have time to call (Don Breaux or Jack Burns) & get permission in ADVANCE to get out on the field. Security kept EVERYONE over 50 yds. from the coaches & players at ALL times. Couldn't even get to some of the staff members I know after ptractice. Going back again - will call FIRST this time.

Paper this morning listed official attendance at Redskins Park yesterday at 5,000. OC =old friend Don Breaux. Don was at Florida St in the late 1960's along with Gibbs, & was on Gibbs' original Redskins staff the from 1981 thru 1992.
I retired from "on the field coaching" in 2001 (after 40 years of High School, College, & Semi Pro). Last season I was an offensive consultant to Coach Jim Woodson (Powhatan High School - just outside Richmond, Va). Jim runs this offense. We went 14-0, winning the Virginia High School League 4A State Championship.

Bill Peterson was head coach at Florida St in the 1960's. In 1964 - he sent "OC" Bill Crutchfield to visit Sid Gillman with the SD Chargers. They put Gillman's offense in in '64 with Biletnekoff, etc. OTHER men who served on that staff in the 1960's were: Bobby Bowden; Don James (IMO best coach in Pac 10 history); Don Breaux; Joe Gibbs; Bill Parcells; Dan Henning ("OC" with Carolina Panthers); Joe Avezanno; Bobby Jackson (recently retired as Martz' "OC" w/Rams); John McGregor; Bobby Ross (my wife's cousin); ETC. My connection with the Redskins staff goes back to THOSE years. Dan Henning had done his practice teaching under me in 1964 - through him - I met many of the above coaches.

In 1987 - I coached the Richmond Ravens (along with John McGregor (on ABOVE list of FSU coaches). We coached out of Joe Gibbs' notebook. When the strike came - we sent nine players up tha helped them go 4-0 during the strike - & beat Dallas' REGULARS who didn't strike). Our QB - Tony Robinson (U. of Tennessee) started for them in the Dallas game.

Coach Mountjoy: Perhaps you can help me sort out some offensive theory history. I am trying to get a sense of when and how the Redskins under Coach Gibbs started experimenting with bunched/compressed receiver formations. Did this happen while Jerry Rhome was on the staff? To your knowledge, did Coach Rhome play a role in the adoption of the Bunch by the Redskins?

Any insights you have to that period would be greatly appreciated.

A) Ted - I visited with four members of the Redskins staff yesterday (OC - Don Breaux; OL coach Joe Bugel; QB Coacjh Jack Burns; & TE Coach Warren Simmons. Asked them the question you wanted to know - "who innovated the BUNCH". They said that oit originated with Joe Gibbs & DFon breauz, & Jack Burns expanded it (in the late 80's).

B) Tiger-One: 20,000 people (plus the band & cheerleaders) were at the Skins afternoon practice yesterday. Our staff got "VIP" passes, which enabled us to get on the field. See article below: It was UNREAL (the 20,000 fans at practice):

Everywhere you turned it was an incredible sight. Cars lined up for miles waiting to get in. Fans standing in rows 15-20 deep. Other fans perched atop a hill, straining to see the action.


All because of Fan Appreciation Day. The Redskins estimated the crowd at around 20,000. We have to agree with the figure. Regardless, there were a lot.

One fan, Mark Anthony of Knoxville, Tenn., drove all night and arrived at Redskins Park at 4:45 a.m.

''I'm a lifelong Redskins fan,'' said Anthony, a morning disc jockey/talk show host. ''I'm so excited about [Joe] Gibbs. I wanted to be the first here.''

We'll take his word that he was.

The crowd saved its loudest ovations for Gibbs, who addressed the crowd before practice started. Chants of ''Joe! Joe! Joe!'' turned into ''We Want Dallas!''

''We hear ya,'' Gibbs told them. He also said "You've been great the last 2 weeks, we've had tremendous crowds, sometimes it's been burning hot, but you are out here twenty deep, we know we have the best fans in the world."

The players were impressed. A couple young players would turn around once in a while and point to thousands of fans lining up for autographs, minutes after practice had started. But receiver Darnerien McCants wasn't surprised.

''They're Redskins fans,'' he said. ''That's how they're supposed to be.''

. . . Running back Clinton Portis said he'll play Monday against Denver. He did practice this afternoon.

. . . Barry Wilburn attended practice. He's now a commercial real estate agent on Capitol Hill.

. . . McCants knows of one big difference between Gibbs and Steve Spurrier. The former actually knows how to pronounce his name. Spurrier butchered his first name, calling him anything from Dartenien to Darterien.

''[Gibbs] knew who I was before I introduced myself,'' McCants said.

. . . Chad Morton was spotted wearing a Run, Clinton, Run T-shirt under his pads. Portis, of course, had the same shirt.

. . . The running backs continue to work on blocking. Running backs coach Earnest Byner had them perform one drill in which the players stood in a circle, with three holding blocking bags and another in the middle. The player would block one of the players, focusing on his arm thrust, making sure to get underneath the pads.

. . . McCants took a break to, um, relieve himself in the woods during practice. As he returned the crowd cheered. And Morton shouted to him, ''Did you wash your hands?''

. . . Lemar Marshall intercepted a pass this afternoon.

. . . The Redskins once again ran a lot of scout team stuff. It was funny to hear the crowd cheer when a member of the Redskins' scout offense, posing as a Denver player, would break off a nice play.

. . . Safety Ifeanyi Ohalete stepped in front of tight end Fred Baxter to intercept a Patrick Ramsey pass. Ohalete often seems to be in the right spot. Just wish he had more speed.

. . . There's a big emphasis on keeping players upright. After one play, when the linemen got tangled up and some fell to the ground, players on the sideline shouted, ''Stay up! Stay up!'' The more players who fall to the ground, the greater the chance there is of one getting hurt.
