Another ? regarding throwing motion/drills

"Hug & Squeeze" - this is a technique that keeps the ball in the most efficient position to throw. Hug the ball to the body, and squeeze the elbows. This position allows the QB to effectively "load".

This motion is very common in young QBs, b/c they were shortstops all the way up through Little League and they were taught that circular (thumb to thigh; ball to sky) motion.

1. Start the ball being held w/ two hands in the throwing pocket. That is a few inches past the sternum on his throwing arm side. When the two hands seperate you are looking for the ball to go up and out. Film the kid from the side and from behind and let him see his motion and understand what you want. From here you start talking about a quick release, other QBs might have a quicker release and actually get the ball to the target quicker than your starter that has the slow release.

2. Sit the QB down on his butt w/ both feet out in front of him w/ knees bent comfortably. Stand 5 to 8 yards away. Make sure the ball is in the throwing position w/ his torso coiled when you give him the command to throw it to you as quick as he can. Every drill is on command and he is working toward a quick release. Being on the ground will shorten his big wind up of dropping the ball down.

3. Standing up (2 QBs throwing to 2 other QBs 10 yards away) get their feet set. With the ball in the throwing pocket, the QBs throw on command to their partner trying to get there first.

4. You can walk the QB side ways and on command he is to set his feet and then deliver the ball w/ a quick release. The QB holds the ball on his sternum until he hears the command and then as he is setting his feet you can see the ball position change to his throwing pocket.

5. Now walk the QB walk away from his target. In both walking drills he is to turn the easy way and the next time he turns the hard way (spin all the way around his throwing arm). He always sets his feet first before starting his motion.
