Superchief, have you ever written a book on your wide-tackle 6 defense? I've seen you on a few boards quite a bit. You have quite a bit of good info and I'm wondering if you've ever put together a complete playbook, book, or video with your total package in it.
If not, do you have a main source of info that you found to be the most helpful to you?
44AttackD: Thank you for the kind words. To answer your questions: No, I have never written a book or made a video on the Wide Tackle-6 scheme that we run. About seven years ago, when I was at another school, we did create a playbook; but that was primarily for the staff. Most of what I learned about this defense I learned from the late John Devlin. He was the DC for Jerry Claiborne at Kentucky, Maryland and Va Tech. When I first got involved with this scheme, he was the man I went to for answers. I have been very fortunate in that I have had the opportunity to work with some great defensive coaches; I learned a whole lot from them. I have also spent time reading about Buddy Ryan's 46 scheme and the 8-man front scheme used by Univ Washington in the early 90's. Last, but not least, I have been in this business for over 30 years; one can learn a great deal if he is willing to sit and listen. If you have questions about the WT6, post them and I will be more than happy to help you if I can.
How do you read your ILBs? Read Backfield flow or read O-Line? What is the alignment of your DTs and ILBs (vertical as well as horizontal)? I had the oppurtunity to talk with Coach Devlin a couple of times before he passed and I have to say he was a very class act! More than willing to halp and do wht he could. Thanks in advance.
Our DT's are aligned on the inside eye of the OG's, and our LB's are head-up on the OT's and 5yds off the LOS. Sometimes we will put the DT's in a 3 tech and the LB's splitting the inside leg of the OG's. The DT's might align head-up on the OG if stunting to their outside gap. We feel that since most H.S. LB's are going to look at the backfield, we might as well have them read that. HOWEVER, they must be able to see pullers. We have them look at the area that Coach Devlin called the spot (an area behind the QB and in front of a normal FB). By looking there, the LB's can see the backfield direction as well as a puller.
