Arthur Pincus, in his book, American Football, the Essential Companion (1988), states that the first football game played was between teams from Princeton and Rutgers Universities. That date was November 6, 1869. Thus the game begins. Coach CAmpbell

In 1869 during the first game running and throwing of the ball was not allowed, twenty five players were on each side, there was no protective equipment, and scoring was only by field goals, which were knee-kicked over the bar, often on the run.
After the first game being played that game did not inspire a meteoric growth of intercollegiate football. Columbia joined Princeton and Rutgers by playing one game in 1870, with no intercollegiate games being played the following year.
