Having trouble in 40 stoping the cutback with weak side OLB in a 2 TE personnel. the tackles are securing A gap and our Middle backer is getting flow strong by the uncovered center, and that read causes him not to be able to get to the weak B gap in time. Then our WOLB ends up getting blocked by the uncovered tackle. This play sets us up for trouble when the boot off of it and the WOLB is coming down hard to stop the cutback, which takes him really far out of his cover 3 drop. The Boot works becase our ends are squeezing so hard to stop cutback play. they end up just dumping it off to the TE climbing as he drags across the field.
Any Advice would be great on things to do to counter these plays by staying in a 40.
What coverage are you playing ? We play Cover 4 which gives us the safeties in run support. On run action away the backside safety will run 5yards forward while reading for boot and playaction and plays cutback. This lets our linebackers fast flow and provides us with a cutback defender. On boot we then have the safety falling onto the TE even if the OLB cannot cover him. This will allow the WOLB to wall off a dragging TE from the frontside. So we then have SOLB and MLB playing the run that side, with WOLB and FS covering boot and cutback.
I like the 8 man front with regards to the run stop - but what worries me is the potential 4 verticals with the 2 TE and 2 WR. Also playaction can easily slide the TE into the flats or the curl area and make a tough play for the Linebackers to cover. Thats why i feel the 4-3 is better all around to play this? Do you have problems with those passes versus 2TE or how to cover them?
