Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I have 2 good running backs, which leads me to split backs. It seems that most coaches are running the veer out of I backs however. Is this because of the midline, personell reasons, or personal preferences? Thanks for your time- Coach Patterson
Coach, I hope you found your answer by now, I am running th e veer from the I because I like the I power game, and I have a true fullbadck. I do like split backs and may on day run it but for me I am used to the I and am more comfortable with it. If your two backs are the same physiclly split may be better.
The I back allows you to have a TB who will be able to concentrate and better his skills as a TB while you can focus on the FB who will only have to learn that position. With the Split backs, you force two players to perform two positions.
Coach Patterson, are you Coach Patterson who has the Monticello Georgia HS Team and formerly of Darien Ga McIntosh Academy ? If so, give me an email at : coacheaston@hotmail.com if you can.

Why not run both? We run our entire running game out of "I" and "Splits", and find that the fundamental steps and aiming points do not change that much. Basically, we run every play out of each set. It gives us more flexibility, less predictability, and allows for adjustments based on what different fronts are doing, what the weather is doing, and so forth.
We've never had a problem with it...and it lends itself perfectly if you are an option team.
Coach P, Thanks for answering my inquiry! I have tried unsuccessfully to answer you back from the private message board. Finally, hit on this idea and you should get my response. Your at Stockton, eh? I coached in the Fresno area from 1973 to 1984, when Coach Sweeny was at Fresno State. Thanks again for your time. About your posted question, I prefer "I" backs, but really you can throw better out of split backs in my opinion. Your concern is running and to me the angles are better for the inside veer from the "I". Like lochness, I run from both sets and don't have any problems, gives the defense another look. I like to run an old football play, the cross buck, from split backs and have built a short passing series around it as well. Good luck.

I found it more effective to run midline from the I and Inside/Outside Veer from split backs. I like running load from split backs and speed from I. My advice- run both. Good luck.

Coaches, thanks for the input. The past few years, we have run an offset I backs power and toss game. My TB, who will be a senior this year, has been with us since his sophomore year, averaging over 100yds/game throughout. If we run the option out of I backs, does he now become the fullback/diveback? Thanks again!
Not unless you want him to be. If the young man is averaging 100 yds per game as a TB, why get him beat up running dives? Let him take the pitches and keep on truckin'.
