Definitely step playside. The rule that I tell my linemen and everyone is different is to stay on their tracks. Our track on inside is a 45 degree angle. On outside it is a lot wider because we are drop stepping. If you are running the inside zone to a 1 tech. Then the playside guard and center should take their L step and get on their track (45 degree angle). The playside guard will not block the 1tech (because he is not in his track) but he needs to throw a flipper or a punch to give help for the center. Since the C is also L stepping now he is on his track to block the 1 tech and 9 times out of 10 the play will cut back behind him. If you are running the inside zone to a 3 then the playside guard and center still take their L step. Now when the guard take his L step and gets on his track the 3 will be in his track unless he is squeezing but in that case you have the center doing the same exact thing so now he is picking him up. If you have a 5 & 3 squessing the G will pick up the 5 and C on 3. My theory is not to double team in the zone. If you get two guys overly involved on one guy then you are defeating the purpose of a zone block.
Kel_Coach why not use the FB to block the backside E? That way your backside T can release up for LB. If the FB hits the 1 tech with the C then in some cases you will clog up the line.
I hope this does not sound to confusing for everyone. I am not a real good explainer.
