I have coached for 6 seasons now. I recently applied for a coaching position at an area HS in WV and felt really good about my chances. The coach (age 44) that got the job interviewed in front of me both times. Both of his interviews lasted only about an hour and a half. Mine on the hand were 2 hours the first time and 2 1/2 the second. We were the final 2 from the coaches that applied, and once again I felt great about my chances. In my second interview, most of the conversation was about discipline and how I would handle situations. That showed me that the comittee was concerned about my age of 25. Every time we got talking x's and o's, the conversation got directed back to disipline. I am not whining about my situation, I am just here to say that this was a wonderful experience. To be selected as a finalist for the first time applying for a head coaching position, and I am honored. The tough part is knowing why I wasn't selected. We young coaches and first time applicants for HC positions, need to just do the best we can to sell ourselves and our philosophy. Discipline is a very difficult topic to answer correctly, because it is like apples and oranges. Some principals, and comittee members hope for a tough coach, and some want the opposite. My suggestion is that if you get in a situation like mine, then just tell them, not what you think they want to hear, but how you are. That was probably my biggest mistake and I have learned from this. I hope my experience helps other coaches. I would like to congratulate my opponent and wish him the best of luck. I will have my chance one day. -Coach Mays
