Empty Pass Protection

Gun. We are a single-wing team that runs some spread so we don't like being under center. One more thing we would have to practice.

Do you run an unbalanced single wing? If so, that might have an impact on your pass pro.
1-That's a "short edge" on the weak side after the TE releases.
2-I know some single wing coaches say that the single wing center can't be counted on to block as effectively as a conventional center.
Not that I have the answers - I'd love to hear about an effective pass pro from an unbalanced single wing.

If you are going to be in the empty formation alot you should have multiple pass protection schemes. This is because defenses can attack your protection schemes if they know that you run the same protection all the time. There are a number of different schemes that work but the QB must have full understanding of what is going on.

Here are some:

You can ID the linebacker that the defense uses to blitz the most and slide the center to the side he is on, while the opposite side guard and tackle block BOB.

You can slide the whole line one direction to take care of inside stunts and blitzes but must know that you have to throw hot off of any outside rusher.

You can also have schemes where the only unblocked rushes come from the outside. This is done by having the tackle and guard set vertically and they would block the most dangerous rushers (the inside most rushers)

We will probably grip and rip. We are only looking to run this 5 times a game. We will use our regular pass pattern schemes out of this (double slants, wheels, verticals, hitches) we will run the jailbreak screen.

just for clarification, what is "BOB"? Also, would you vary your OL splits for the empty set?- how wide?
