Where To Begin?

Sorry about the delay. We were on spring break. We ran the wing t for many years. We have also committed to the option fully. I will give you my opinions, but Coach Campbell, Coach Vint, and their staffs are best to contact. We are a very small school. Anytime we don't have to block someone, it is an obvious advantage. We have always implemented the triple first (in the wing t, we did after the 20 or 80 series). Once they could read that, the rest progressed very well and systematically. We put in a counter and the play action off the triple. The rest would be, as you feel comfortable. We did not put in midline until after the first scrimmage (7 days). I will say that you must fully commit to the option. It cannot be a part time series. With such a small team, it has been my experience that too many formations gave our kids a bit of a headache. We stuck to 3-5 per game. There were a couple of years with the wing t that were had 20 formations, but we had some very good players and good numbers. We now use double slot, unbalanced (2-SE on same side), and trips. We did use a formation I got from Coach Perry from Delaware called friends: unbalanced with the SE standing 5 feet from the OT and the other SE 3 feet from him. It was a good goaline formation. We shifted to it and caught a few teams. I will also say that we have only had a "true" TE 3 times in 15 years. This is why we have not used one in most situations. We have run the basic Navy plays that are counters (HB and QB). We will add their Rocket toss this year. The option is still the toughest play to defend but you must be patient. I watched a tape from Coach Vint where he was caught in the backfield 2 or 3 times in a row then finally hit the defense with load option for a 70-yard gain. I love playing most any defense. The 43- tight cover 4 with excellent corners gave us problems and a big, quick team that can play man hurt us in a few games. We game plan versus the team's best defense and watch as much tape as possible to see their adjustments. You need to be very sound on your perimeter blocking and have adjustments for it. The one advantage of the double slot is the D lines up in base the majority of the time. We want them to blitz, but after you hit the Play action off the triple once, the blitz becomes rare. Get all the info you can. In my opinion, you are only as good as your assistants. I have an excellent staff that has been with me for a while. Coach, they do not block anyone on the LOS. I could not believe the 5 tech did not make the tackle. Everyone goes to the second and third levels. The key is to snap the ball when the motion back is behind the fullback. He catches the pitch deep and behind the outside leg of the tackle. You can vary your perimator blocking as in any option series. Run it to the wide side only. If you need more info, call Navy. I think they will email you the scheme. Hope this helps.

1. We install zone dive, triple, midline, speed, and toss running games in that order. Passing game includes quick,three step drop, screens, and play action (pitty pat routes) of course.

2.We use double slot exclusively we then motion or shift to heavy, unbalanced, trips, rainbow (split ends at 3-4 yards from tackles)

3.We install a PA and counter for any install that day. Zone Dive/Triple We Install PA Pitty Pat off of our blocking scheme that week se stalk = stalk fade - se crack = se crack and go with the slot running a wheel Counter would be Slot counter of of veer action.

4. I don't like playing well coached multiple front defenses. Option on me is a difficult thing for quarterbacks to master. We keep this to a minimum by no-huddle and a fast break mentality to offense.

5. Any defense that is new to that team as we see teams go to a different defense to play the option. Any time the coaches make their own kids uncomfortable I am very happy.

Get as much info as you can. If double slot is for you Go the Navy Clinic, visit the staffs at Springfield College in Springfield Mass or UW River Falls in Wisconsin- They all run the double slot to perfection.

Many times the best plays and schemes very simple. I have run the "Rocket" Sweep/toss and combinations off of it since 91 and it is a great play. Leaving the elos man unblocked is essential as the rest of your line getting to the second level. Teams blitz on motion and pay dearly.
