Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We would love to hear opinions as to why the Double Slot/Flexbone is NOT the best formation for a new option team to utlilize the majority of the time.
i think it is because you show no strength except for throwing arm. I think many high school teams will put their strength ( i am referring to sam or safety) to the field. The double slot allows you to run everything out of your base formations to the field and boundary. Because your base formation is "balanced" (as opposed to having a wing or TE set) you can run misdirection to both sides as well. just my two thoughts.
i plan to use this set quite a lot and feel like the belly is an excellent play with the playside slot leading through on the LB. now we have the belly option.
personally, the midline out of the I is a better formation because the TB is stacked and can come down and lead block. i think the midline can be lethal without having any pitch at all!
We ran wing t for many years from double slot and with a te. Last year, we spread teams out with double slot and ran the option series decent. After a few injuries we added the I formation to give a couple guys a rest since all our players go both ways. The last 4 games of the year we ram triple, midline and double option. We had 2 perimator schemes and had a play action off of each. we did very well. We are of the opinion to run a few series as close to perfect as possible. Years ago we got carried away with too many plays and series and beat ourselves. Now we use fewer plays and add some formations. Our kids understand it better and we play with less mental mistakes. We will run complete option next year. Get Coach Campbell's materials and go see a successful coach in your state that runs true option. You'll be surprised how well it fits in to your philosophy. Good luck.
What are some coaches opinions on the weaknesses of the double slot? What did teams do to slow the flexbone offense down? Personally, we have had the biggest problems with teams that angle defensive ends and come hard. We have also had a team that plays like a 4-3 and play corners man up on splits and safeties man up on halfbacks this leaves everybody else in the box to play run with the exception of olb's spying fullback. These teams were very athletic and quick and was able to get away with doing this. Does anybody have any suggestions on how they would attack this type of offense? We are putting in a sprint package that should help us but interested in other opinions.
We run the flexbone and I dont like the automatic motion. Like was said before you need to have a steady diet of counters away from the motion to keep the defense honest. In the playoffs this season we had some teams running blind to the motion side, the problem was they were right about 70% of the time. One thing we did to counter this other than to run counter at them was to hit the SE on a slant because everyone in the box vacates to fly to the motion.

We're a Spread (double slot) team as our base alignment. We just went to this alignment about 4 years ago. Before that we were an I Freeze Option/power team. I'd have to say that since switching to the spread, our option plays have been much more successful.
I agree with coach Cella about needing plays that go against motion. Our best is the ctr. or what you wing-t guys call the Sally play. After a few triples w/motion, a sally usually is wide open.
We also run Tony Demeo's triple out of the Gun. As those of you who are familiar with this package know, you can run triple from both directions with the same look (shotgun triple or counter misdirection).
Yes, it's off a triple look. The p/s wb goes in loop motion just like triple, the qb takes the snap and makes his mesh w/fb on the dive, he rides for 1 sec, then pulls and hands off to the b/s wb who has delayed for a 1 count and then makes his counter action, picking up the pulling BSG and cutting off his kick-out block. PSG, PST & C down block leaving the EMOLS for the pulling BSG.

Another way to run it is to have your backside linemen pass set. Your BS HB goes in Tail motion, then at the snap flies into B gap to Iso the LB. The backside linemen, invite the Dt and DE up field, then punch by them and get downfield onto LB's. It's like Draw blocking. It's probably been our most successful play for the last few years.

I'm working on some different cut-ups from '03 and one of them is of our sally play. If you'd like to email me we can discuss how I could get that to you and maybe the possibilty of some trades. Actually, if any of you happen to be members on Jetsweep.com, I hope to send my cut-ups of jets, sallys, and our gut plays to coach Elrod for that site.
Double slot question: What kind of guys do you need at the slot back positions? Speed I assume is a must for the counters and jet stuff, but what about size? When I look at the double slot I see these guys being (at least one of them anyway) as a hybrid athelte who can run the ball, block, and be a reciever.

Spread_Jet31,I would love to exchange cut-ups with you.We run flexbone--- Midline,Inside Veer,Outside Veer,Counter Trey,Lead Option,Play action passes,etc.lotiefs@bellsouth.net I even have some footage of Nicholls State running flexbone.
We put our best athletes at slot. Not necessarilly our fastest kid or our biggest kid,but must be a competitor, a great blocker and good hands. He will get his share of touches especially with the game on the line.1st priority is blocking since he is part linemen/TE.
