I'm looking for some advice on running a FB trap out of the I formation. We have run it several times out of a wing-t formation, and love what we have been able to do with it against an odd front. However, we are running more and more out of the I formation, and love how quick the fb dive hits. However, we would like to be able to run a trap with the fullback also, and are not sure how to get the timing down with the FB closer to the QB in the I formation than the wing-t. We seem to have always had a good fullback, and we like getting the ball to him different ways. Any help would be appreciated.

I believe sweep action out of I is the traditional way. Let's say the sweep action is to the right, the qb will reverse out by opening up left. The fb trap targets the butt cheek of the center. So as the qb reverses out, the fb runs to the left butt cheek of the center for the mesh. The Tailback runs the pitch fake. Center blocks back for the left pulling guard. After the mesh, the fullback should run tight to the rear of the pulling guard to take him to the natural run lane provided by the down blocks of the right side of the line.
you can also run the quick trap off of the veer look. QB, FB, and TB look like inside veer on the snap. QB gets the ball deep to the FB and the FB cuts up the gut behind the pulling G. QB and TB continue on option path. Some people like to have the QB pivot and fake option back to the other side to hold the LB, but either way can be good.
We've had success running the counter trap to a 1/5 side with the TB serving as the influence-going away from the playside. We did not pull the BST for the FSLB'er and let the MLB'er go, in the 4-3 hoping the TB's influence would "block" him.
