Run the Counter too?

can run it off of lead, power, pitch

i think it is the greatest play in the game

love talking about the counter

what kind of fronts are you seeing?

with head up 4 techs
we have found that this works

punch the 9 with the te and then go inside

have the pst pass set with outside foot (lateral step, show pass)
if the slanting 4 goes outside, let him, he will get kicked out by the pulling og
if the slant goes inside the pst drops his inside foot and then crushes him down inside

it may sound a little odd, but it works well

we ran this along with the usual block down on the 4 with the te, if he goes inside then it makes an easy shot onto the lb for the te

we kind of did the same thing sw

on counter through the b/c gap area or seal puller would look in to out as our te was generally punching the end and going to force

on counter WIDE, our te was punching and going inside, the our seal puller would be looking out to in
trying to get around the log of course

we could change it around during the game though, depending on what they were doing,, the concepts need to be understood by the players, they need to be able to understand what is going on, you need to be able to help them with that, and then communicate and show them what you want

counter and all of its forms is a great play

for our tight counter when we first came together with my old staff of 5 years we told the rb to read the kickout and cut accordingly

our backs did better when we had them aim for the outside butt of the psg and follow the pulling tackle's (or whoever) lead through

they started cutting it back into the backside a gap at times it hit so tite, but it opened up their eyes to seeing where it should go

we rarely called counter wide, as we did not have the speed to get out there, especially with our pulling ot trying to get around the log

it was mainly a wrinkle we used during games when the defensive ends were blowing it up really good and really flat

we were just much much better at destroying that de as soon as the te released off of him (the te's had to know the guard's abilities to get the timing right, stay a little longer for the slow ones etc) and cutting it up in there

we ran counter off of trap, lead, pitch, and stretch

i say we ran it off of those, we could, and did throughout the time i spent with my oh so previous staff, but mostly would only do it off of one or two of those plays, and we considered counter and all of its variations to be our bread and butter play

we ran some double te bone in the red zone, power stuff

pitch, and counter were our two running plays
if we could get down there (which was often a chore due to lack of a qb and wrs) we usually scored a touchdown running counter
