Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
How many plays do you check or pair at the LOS? Do you give your team 2 plays at a time and let them put themselves into position to run the best play? If you are checking blitz do you only have a couple of plays the QB can check too automatically and how does he communicate the check?
We have a series of dummy calls and live calls...dummy hand signals and live hand signals...that we employ in our check system. With this system, we are able to check from a run to a pass...from a pass to a run...and into a blitz package vs. zero coverage. I will typically give the QB a 1 to 4 play check package based on the situation. For example, if we call a pass play that is a particularly good cover 2 play, but the defense aligns in a cover 3 structure, the QB will use a hand signal to indicate a pattern change and might have the choice of up to 4 patterns to check to. A verbal alert will be used when there needs to be a change in protection using an "easy" call and a live color to activate the protection. We do not include the audible into the cadence...our cadence is rather basic and simple with no numbers, therefore we simply have a live word and a number to indicate the play change. We obviously will dummy call most of our other plays as well as dummy signal at times to avoid code breaking by the defense. A bit difficult to describe the system without showing examples, but that's a bit of an intro....would be glad to go into this further. pdow
We have used this system where all our plays are colors/objects and the QB gets a signal from the Coach/Backuup QBs and calls the play in the snap count. ex: Blue 79, Blue 79 would tell the Lineman to run the Inside Zone Rt. Because Blue is Inside Zone Right because we will run the Inside Zone until we are Blue in the Face. So the Signaler would just touch his face to give the QB the play. The numbers don't mean anything on runs. If we would want to run it left we would use the object word that is paired with Blue, which is Sky. So basically we can run our entire offense from the first day of practice from the LOS or the QB can audible to any play. Personal preference is I like to move the formations, see the defenses adjustment and then signal the play in on the line. On the passes, the color/object word tell the protection and the numbers equal route schemes. For ex: Red 23 would be a slant with an arrow, Red = 3step Right(because it gives the Defense a case of the Red A** if we can complete the little dink passes for big yards) 2=Slant for 1st Rec, 3= Arrow for 2nd Rec. (and of course Rose would be 3 step left).
So in the situation you presented with a blitz coming, if you want you could signal in the play from the sideline and have the QB call check with me in the huddle or you could give him a simple rule to live by and let him check from the field. For ex. 4 man Blitz weak, you may want to check to a Sprint Out away or a 3 step route and Coach him up in practice what the audible will be.
