How do you run Option plays against 9 defenders in the box?
We played a team who lined up with a strange-looking 5-4 type of defense. We were running Inside Veer to the strongside, from splitbacks. On the strongside they had a player in the B and C-Gaps and after a few plays they put in a NT heads up with the Centre. There was an OLB lined up a good bit wider than the TE. Their ILBs shot various gaps and moved about a good bit, but they were generally somewhere in the vicinity of our Guards.
We’re new to the system, and we gave up running Option plays after a few failed attempts. The obvious choice was to throw deep over the middle, as they had no safeties and man coverage on our WRs. Daring us to go deep, really. But is it possible to successfully run Inside or Outside Veer against this defence? Or would we need to have Midlines and Counters and all that in our arsenal?
Hey coach, you might try running lead option strong. Have your WR crack the OLB, and lead on the corner with your FB. Everything else is sealed inside like the outside veer. If your WR has a tough time making the block on the OLB, have the FB and the WR change assignments. The WR will stalk the corner, and the FB will block the OLB(alley player) as you option the end. Good luck!
