Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Does anyone here run nine men in the box? We experimented last season by running a 50 defense and inverting both safeties tight. We mostly ran a rotating cover 3 based on flow or QB action. It was very successful, as we knocked nearly 100 yards off of our per-game average.
Basically, we want to continue with this defense. But, when we installed this last season, it was done "by the seat of our pants". We basically just sat down and over many long sessions, designed a scheme we were happy with. Going into this season, I'd like to know if any one else has used this concept. We play it like a 4-across (just with the safeties up tight, rather than the corners back) concept where you can disguise a number of coverages (cov 2 sky and cloud, cover 4, the rotating cov. 3 I mentioned, etc. ).
If anyone has any feedback on this issue, please let me know. Anything we can do to help coach it up better will be very helpful.
Interesting, but I have a question: how do you combat rub routes (with the primary receiver in the flats)? For example, we run a pretty exotic version of the "46" (which looks more like a "44"), but HB delay wheel routes keep killing us.
Our defense is designed to combat a very run-heavy division. However, if a team is hurting us in the flats or with the deep ball (where our two weaknesses will be), we have the ablility to call any number of different coverages, either from the disguised "double invert" look OR from the base "shell" alignments. So, if someone actually starts to make a living on us by attacking a soft spot, we can quickly adjust (and often times have that adjustment disguised).
Coach, I have heard the Bob Stoops of Oklahoma talk about putting nine in the box against teams that don't throw the ball well. Kansas State, TCU also get into some nine man fronts. The front is shaded strong, nose strong A, End in a 5 tech, with the Sam backer walked up on the TE in a loose 9. Weak side T in a 3, WE in a loose 5. FS walked up to weak side 5 yds deep, just outside weak OT. SS 8 yds deep over TE.
we do something very similar. against 21/22 personnel, particularly on run downs, we are always gonna get 9 in the box. we do this from "our" robber coverage. i say "our" because we have kinda combined several different ways of playing robber into "our" way that has worked well for us. several years ago we did roll into different coverages from a 4 across look. now we play robber on run downs against 21/22 personnel and we play it as a man coverage, zone coverage or a combo coverage. this takes a lot of the pressure off the safeties, and allows them to aggressively play the run. we don't ask them to be both a post player and a run player. that is tough to do. so for us, it's one or the other. so, basically the only difference between what we're doing and what you've described is that we play halves or man instead of thirds. if you're interested i can describe the specifics of how we play robber. the main thing is that our safeties key through the te, emolos or an uncovered, depending on what side they're on.
"don't think you are, know you are."
"stop trying to hit me & hit me."
I would love to hear a little more about your defense. We are based out of the 3-3 and I think it would be great to find different things we can do with it.
hey Zulu I'd like to hear more about how you all use that robber cov. and how it works for you , cause I'm more of a 4 across guy buy I'm always looking for an easier and more effective way to play both the pass and the run
Man2Man, I would also greatly appreciate any information you are willing to share on your defense. My e-mail is = MTran6795@aol.com -Thanks and Good Luck
