We have a problem in our youth program where we have some coaches that have a win at all cost attitude. Not to the extent of doing anything unethical, or illegal......however, not necessarily to the benefit of the players. The youth level of football, in my opinion, is intended to be a developmental stage. At this level they learn the basics of football, how to compete, teamwork, and striving to achieve goals. These are qualities that can be instilled in kids that will last a lifetime, whether they play football in the future or not. In reality, the amount of kids who are going to move on to the NFL are very slim, so the best things that a coach can do is to grow their love of football, and teach them qualities that they can use as they move on in life.
What we are experiencing though are a few coaches whose will to win is taking away the opportunities for other players to develop. Who knows if these other players will turn into football players or not, but nonetheless they are not receiving a fair shot to learn positions that they should be able to compete for.
My question, is this......It seems to me that there are two philosophies to coaching youth football. One is to win at all cost and put the players you need at the positions that you need in order to win games. If you get a chance to develop other players, fine. However, if you don't it doesn't matter, as long as you are winning. The other philosophy also emphasizes winning football games, but not at the cost of taking away the opportunities for other players to compete for positions.
Which way is the right way to coach youth football?
