Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Our DE's are taught to protect the outside. If their man releases outside, they are taught to attack his outside shoulder and get flat down the LOS.
Now, what happens when a team runs an option play with the EMLOS arc blocking to an OLB? If our DE sees his man step outside (arc block) he is going to step outside with him, causing a large hole inside. How will he play the QB against this blocking scheme?
If you are playing a 4-4, I am assuming that the Strong Side ILB is responsible for either A-gap or B-gap, going opposite of the DT in front of him. If your DE is responsible for contain (D-gap), who do you have responsible for C-gap. Do you use a "wide" call telling the OLB to the strongside to move inside, similiar to a 4-3 with the DE in a "9"? That is the only way you would be lined up in a sound defense to me. If that is the case then your strong-side OLB will take the QB if he cuts under your DE defending the perimeter. I would say if you are playing a true 4-4, that your DE needs to be in a 7-tech, or possibly head up in a 6-tech. He would be responsible for C-gap. If the TE arc releases, what is the OT doing? Probably the DE is considered EMOL and on this option play he is the pitch key. If that is the case then the OT is blocking down, which should have your DE squeezing down and taking the QB.
are they doubling the three techn. ? if they are then the ILB should scrape into the C gap area and take first threat. the DE should take two steps with the arc of the TE then get eyes inside and take first threat. the S/S should rip thru the TE's block and have time to get to pitch. the F/S should be filling down hill ( dive, dump, qb, pitch ). the backside ILB is taking the playside A gap for cutback. the dc from Arizona State gave me that info at a clinic in Houston this year. that is basically how we play it from a 43 defense. we never assign people unless we are blitzing and forcing a quick pitch. the rest of the time we just play techn. take first threat that shows. the blocking scheme will take us to the right person anyway. DT's and Mac: Dive DE and Stinger: Dive or QB depending on the block of the TE DE and Wolf: Dive or QB depending on the block of the OT the DE will squeeze veer blocks and end up at the mesh point take first threat ( should be dive or both at hand off ). if the OT or TE veer blocks then the LB sees a closed door so he scrapes outside and takes the next threat ( who should be the QB ). if TE ARC blocks the the DE play normal and end up on the QB. the LB will see an open door with an ARC block so he will fill it and end up on Dive. if OL bases then we tell the defense to defend their gap. so the DE is on QB, LB is on Dive. even if we play our 4-2-5 look we play it the same way.
Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my GUNS!!!
there are only 3 things a DE can do to you verses the option.
1. Play hard, go directly to qb in the most expedient manner, usually through the c gap.(if he steps with the TE on the arc release outside, he's dead in my opinion. Any OC that sees that will take advantage right now!
2. Play soft and string out the play. 3. Go directly to pitch
Following base defensive rules that have been around a long time, if the DE is inside the OLB, he has QB. If the OLB is inside the TE, then he has QB and OLB has pitch. I run a 4-2-5 and we have a SS at 3 and 3 off the LOS, and he has 3 assignments on every play (pitch on the option, contain on the sweep, flats on the pass) No offense to anyone who has his DE step outside with an arc releasing TE, I'm just not familiar with that technique. When he vacates(TE), the double team and what we call "slam and slide" to the scraping backer for the cutoff at the 2nd level will negate the threat to the c gap. Unless you have a really great DE, we should win that race with the dive back on a regular basis. Your SAM has already taken himself out by going to pitch. Am I missing something?
