Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
How many have your OB's key the QB? Some coaches don't like the tackle read for run/pass, b/c you get alot of false keys. Some find that reading the near back may be a problem with misdirection plays. The coaches reading the QB say they read the QB for levels and direction, and play accordingly.
here are our reads: read near back path to near OL for pass only Inside To: Bounce / Crease ( stay and look for the ball to bounce to you or hit the crease off tackle ) Outside To: Force ( two yards behind TE or OT ) Away: Cobra ( shuffle to stack behind nearest DL and play cutback/counter , bootleg, reverse by looking for color coming back; look behind the center at the spot ) we play ours very aggressive vs. the run. on pass downs we move back and wider. vs. a wing or slot: he is our near back Eyes: force Ear: Spill ( come off of his butt and attack down the LOS and wrong arm the blocker through his crotch ) Away: Cobra Not looking at you: Pass
just my two cents
Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my GUNS!!!
I am attempting to have my DE in a 5 or 7 tech and my OLB read EMOL, Near Back and Q (Triangle) for run pass read. I am having difficulty breaking this down from Individual skills to half line drills. What is your teaching progression when working with a DE who has contain and a OLB who has secondary contain? Our DE are in a 5 tech to the split end side and a 7 tech when on the TE. Our OLB are about 3 by 3 outside the EMOL. Thanks for your help.
Here's a simple read that has been very effective for us. We use it with our DB's, but I'm sure you can use it for OLB's. Read the UNCOVERED lineman (the lineman who has a LB over him). If the lineman fires out across the LOS, the play is a run. If the lineman DOES ANYTHING ELSE (pull, cross-block, retreat, etc). play pass first and then react to run. The reason we went to this was that our DB's were seeing pulls on bootlegs and playing them as runs. The one that really hurt us was the OT's down-block and OG's pull on wing-t waggle. If you go back and look at your films, I'm sure you'll see that this is a simple, effective read.
We tell our kids that if they're not sure what the lineman is doing, play pass first. We would rather have them give some ground than give up a TD becuase they ran up the field and the ball went over their head.
If you play ZONE - you had better have a play action pass read for LB's (besides the ball and/or near B). If you play MAN - it's alright to read ball to near back.
