Just a thought that could possibly start a lively discussion. As I have observed this forum and benefited dramatically from its contents, I also have seen how many different concepts there are for teaching a QB to throw, and while I am aware of how many moving parts there are in a throw, I believe there can be only one thing in the end to evaluate a throw when a QB is under pressure. The young mind, just cannot handle more, man, I can't handle anymore and I am an adult. I can setup the throw using multiple concepts, but when the motion, or a play, begins, because of its speed, I must result to "feel," not thought. In that case, while I may have trained(many things about the motion, the process, the setup) to throw properly a thousand times, there are only 1-2 variables that if left unmonitored during the setup and release, the throw will fail consistently, and being that the throw is my only contribution to the play - I better get it right. On the other hand, if I control for those things, then I can stay consistent and even improve no matter what age. However, there are so many views on motion, where does the QB go to get a straight answer on what those are? The key is knowing what the 1 or 2 things, regardless of a proper setup, that if changed, will affect the ball the most - if I get those - in fact, if I setup right, and can get it to one thing when I actually make a move, and I am aware of it during the "feel" of the release, my consistency will skyrocket and my confidence will follow. Now, there are no pictures in the stat books, we are talking about a catchable ball, thrown on plane, and spirals reasonable to perfect. Theoretically, the spiral should become commonplace, an afterthought to accuracy and control. I believe this is true because a QB's mind, especially a young QB, must not be clouded by "many things." Now, there may be painstaking hours of instruction in the process, but as coaches, I think it is on us to get concepts down to the one thing, maybe two things, that are non-negotiable, the absolute fundamental for function in each discipline we teach - What is the non-negotiable fundamental in each skill and why? It has to be functional, practical, and measurable to be taught. We do it religiously for Line play(ie. first step angle - I have no idea if that is the "one thing" for line play - just an example), LB play(first step forward? Outside arm free?), etc. tying everything back to it faithfully. Why not QBs in throwing? Based on that concept, and backed by the function of the arm mechanically, if there is only one "feel" that can be measured in the mind of a QB that will most determine the outcome of a pass aside from being hit or being unable to throw, then that must be primary and central to the coaching of the QB motion, and everything must tie back to the one thing. There may be many factors that can cause one thing to fail and those are a strong supporting cast, but only one will decisively kill a throw regardless if you do everything else right. Anyone have any thoughts on what we can get it down to? 1 "thing" and why?
