QB's steps on outside veer from the I

What are you looking for to call the keep? I've never heard it done like this, what's the rationel and how has it worked?

QB pushes off the back foot, stepping at a 35 degree angle, its a little longer step than the inside veer, then step with the backside foot. As the qb takes his 35 degree step he starts reaching the ball back to the FB and gets his eyes on the give key (9 tech most of the time). After the the 35 degree step, we use a small catch up step as the mesh is taking place, and the FB is diving in C gap. Read the inside jersey number of your give key. You must get a good trey block from your TE and PST, we really like to run vs a true 9 tech.

Our base offense is inside veer, midline, and speed option. We run the outside veer as a change up to what we do. We rarely run the outside veer vs. even front teams (ie. 3 tech and 7 tec). We prefer to run it vs. odd fronts (50 or 33 stack).

Our rational for making it a pretermined call vs. reading it is that we want to hit the defense quick off tackle and not give the QB amy room for error on this. We will call Keep if we see that the end man on the los or the invert, is crashing hard on the dive. If he is, then we will call keep. We have never been able to call keep and get the pitch back in pitch relationship with the QB (we run this play from both I and Split backs) to use him as we would on inside veer. Our QB's get out the gate so fast to get the ball to the FB that the TB simply has no time to get there. If we were a Double Slot option team, a la Air Force/Navy/Georgia Southern, then yes, we would be able to get the back in the proper relationship.

Finally, we run a great dosage of what we call Belly(Wing-T guys call this Down or Belly Down) where we pull the front side OG to kick out the end man on the los while giving the ball to the FB on the same track as outside veer. The only diffence for the QB is we have him revers pivot so he doesn't get tangled up with the pulling OG. When you mix this in with the veer, it puts a lot of stress on the end man on the los.
