Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
How many of you use motion as a part of your offense? We use it all the time. I've found that if you motion a player from one side of the formation to the other, that the defense almost never brings someone over to cover them. One of two things happen...nothing, which means you outnumber the defense, or someone moves out of the box, which means they've weakend the core.
We use motion for misdirection, outnumbering the defense, and kicking out a defensive end. Our only problem in the past has been that we have a hard time calling the motion. Adding "motion left/motion right" to the play call is a lot at the youth level. It makes a play call pretty long, and I've had kids forget the play on the way to the huddle! I always told my QB that if the player forgets the play on the way to the huddle, to just call a QB sneak!
If any of you use motion, how do you put it into the play call??
I always like to use motion in my opening 10 play script during the beginning of a game to see how their defense reacts, whether or not they adjust in any way to our use of motion and whether or not they're playing man coverage. Our motion calls are as follows:
Z (flanker) - "ZAP" motion across the formation; "ZIP" short motion; "CRACK" short motion cracking the #2 defender or EMLOS X (split end) - "XRAY" always across formation (rarely used) FB - "TRUCK" slide motion across formation TB - "TRAIN" motion across formation Y - "TEX" short motion out of a slot (rarely used)
"Queen Right ZAP 49 TOSS" "King Right CRACK 48 TOSS" "King Right TRUCK 43 ISO"
We don't use a right or left or callside designation on motion calls. With the exception of Z, the kids know that they will motion only across the formation in one direction. If we want to provide a false read, we will usually either bring Z across or bring the FB across in an offset strong I (King) formation to block the EMLOS when running an inside zone play to the TB.

1. Rip=motion right 2. Liz=motion left 3. Bow=deep motion into the backfield (Wing-T motion of a wing back, for example) 4. Slide=motion in and then shuffle-slide back to your original spot.
We then simply identify who the motion man is.
Z motion right = Z Rip 2 back motion left = 2 Liz Z motion from a wing spot deep into the backfield= Z Bow 3 back motion out, then shuffle back into original spot= 3 slide
