We have a number of base blocking schemes. We simply number the schemes and put a name to them associated with a line call. Then, all the line has to do is remember which plays fall into which schemes and we're good to go. We can run any backfield action we want out of any set, and it's all the same to the linemen.

Here are all the blocking schemes we have. Keep in mind- we never run all in one season. We usually run a maximum of 4 or 5 of these, depending on our talent or lack thereof on the offensive line.

Scheme 1: "Man or Combo": we use man blocking rules or combinations to get leverage and angles to open the hole.

Scheme 2: "Iso": this is our power scheme where we double team down from the point of attack and have either a backside puller or FB responsible for the near ILB

Scheme 3: "Trap": any scheme where we leave the 1st man at or beyond the point of attack unblocked to be trapped by the BACKSIDE guard.

Scheme 4: "Gee": any scheme where we leave the 1st man at or beyond the point of attack unblocked to be trapped by the PLAYSIDE guard.

Scheme 5: "Perimeter": any scheme where linemen are pulling to lead a ballcarrier outside.

Scheme 6: "Option": same principles as the "Trap scheme", except we will not trap the unblocked DL. We will option him with our QB.

Scheme 7: "Zone": Zone blocking principles for Inside Zone and Outside Zone attacks.

When we design our run game, it's pretty simple. Most of our Scheme 1 plays have basic names like "Dive, Belly, Cross" etc. The Scheme 2 plays are more obvious like "Lead and "Power". If we are running Scheme 3, the words "counter" or "trap" appear in the playcall. Scheme 4 always has the tag "G" in it. Scheme 5 is obvious because the terms indicating outside plays like "Sweep, Keeper, Reverse, etc." will be in there. Scheme 6 always has the word "Option" in the playcall, and Scheme 7 always has the word "Zone" in the playcall. So, we do not have any trouble knowing how any play is going to be blocked.

It is also helpful for the backfield because now, we can run "Belly G" or "Dive Counter" or "Lead Reverse" and although the blocking and other action may change, they know they are still running that base running play we taught back in August, because our run plays are all designed into series of similar backfield action (just like the concept of the blocking schemes for the linemen).

Since we've gone to this system, we've been able to be as multiple as we want without any confusion whatsoever. Last season, we had virtually no missed assignments on offense.
