Hi guys, I am a new coach here at a high school in canada, I have played junior and university football as a defensive back my playing carer just ended and have recently been faced with the possibility of being the defensive co-ordinator for a high school. I coached last year and ran defensive backs, and special teams, no problem tottaly comfortable with that. BUT now it looks like i could be the d-coordinator.
Here is our situation: size well we don't have a lot of that, speed and skill we have a ton of! Plus we have one of the best line backers in the province reads and reacts very well especialy for a high school player. We also have amazing db's just good athletes. I also have 1 huge d-line man.
What I propose: I am thinking of running a gap control defense our gusy are just to small to stick in one on one match ups. 40 front with the tackles inside eye of the guards controlling A gaps, ends on the outside eye of the tackles controling C gap. I will have 2 line backers a Will and Sam both line up 3-4 yrds off the ball inside eye of the tackles with B gap responsibility. My stud linebacker would line up as a rover, monster with no gap responsibility, he would line up 5-6 yards off the ball and flow to the play pursuing inside hip of the ball carier. I will run 2 Half Backs, primary responsibility pass, run responsibility would be contain pursuit angle outside in. 2 Corners depending on the athletes I could have them bump and run, 1 Saftey, who would be obviously the alley player. Idealy the defense is designed for the rover to make all the tackles with suport from the safety and 2 linebackers who would check B gap responisbility and then flow, backside backer to the play would slow play and the play side backer would flow hard..
There are a few universities and CFL teams that have run this before with the Rover beign a primarily pass coverage guy. I have modified it a bit to suit the more run orientated game of high school football. There is still a lot of work and modifications that must be done especialy if I will use this style of defense. What I am looking for is any feedback from you experienced coaches maybe even senarios and how to adjust. Belive me the level of football in the USA is much higher than it is here in Canada and that is another reason why I am here to pick your brains!!
p.s. sorry about the length.
