I formation Buck Series

I ran I football for two years and now work for a wing-T guy, so I know a little about both. I used that same type of backfield motion to run counter sweep. The difference is that in the buck sweep, the QB goes straight back and hands off the ball on his third step to the halfback coming across the top. The QB stays on the midline until he boots away from the halfback.

When we ran the play from the I, the hand off was an inside handoff because the TB footwork was drop - crossover - jab back to playside trying to mimic the footwork for the power, so he's actually coming up into the line a little bit, and the QB is coming back to the TB. It's essentially a counter tre action with a fake to the FB who fills for the PS pulling guard. We could also give the ball to the FB on this action with a play we called Sucker Trap.

When we saw that the DT on the PSG was following the guard when he pulled we would have the PSG pull like the counter tre as well as the BSG. The center bases the nose or blocks down on the BS DT and the BSG folds or guts around (whichever terminology you use, not sure if you're a wing-t or an I guy) for the backer (middle backer in a 4-3 or 5-3, backside backer in 5-2 or 4-4). We never had to block the PS DT because he's running after our guard ("sucker"). If the play is against a 5-2 or 4-4, the other inside backer is blocked by the PST who will take him where he wants to go. If the backer reads counter tre and scrapes to C, he is turned out, if he reads power and scrapes to A he gets washed down the line and the fullback cuts out a bit behind that block before going vertical. We used to drill the FB on this read once or twice a week.
