Hey everyone. Little background info on me. 19 years old. Never actually played football. Mother was afraid I'd get hurt. Stupid I know. Since I could never play I decided to learn the other side of football. Have read lots of books on coaching. Month or two ago I saw an ad in the paper for coaching position at the local high school. I knew I'd have no shot at it since I've never coached before, but I emailed the principal (who is also the Varsity HC) and told him I'd like to volunteer on the coaching staff. Setup a meeting for later that week. Told him I have no playing or coaching experience, but I've read as much as possible about football Xs and Os and coaching.
The good news is he's giving me a shot. He said he guarantees me a volunteer position on the varsity team at the least. Said it would most likely be coaching WRs and DBs. Here's the great news. Here's some better news. He has been running ads trying to fill 2 other coaching positions. Assistant for 10th grade, and an assistant for 9th grade. He filled the 10th grade one, but he said he's running out of time and he hasn't yet filled the 9th grade one. He said its a paid position and there's an outside chance he'll let me do it if I'm interested. Of course I said I am interested and he's going to keep me posted. I asked him what specifically the position is. He said that the 9th grade HC is a new coach here and he'd probably need someone to take half the O positions and half the D positions. And he said the assistant would also probably call the defense. It would certainly be a little rocky at first, but I dont doubt my knowledge of the game for even a second. I think that I can do it.
I just felt like sharing because I really think I hit the jackpot on this. I love football. I was absolutely psyched when he said that I could coach WRs/DBs on the varsity team at the very least. I figure that either that position or the 9th grade assistant position are great starts to hopefully a long and successful coaching career.
One side thought though. Any idea how much an assistant coach like the one mentioned would get paid? I have absolutely no idea. Not that it matters, quite frankly because I never thought of coaching as a way of making money. I just thought of it as an opportunity to do something I love. In the first email I ever sent to him I told him that I wanted to volunteer and I would not expect to be compensated in anyway. Knowledge would be my reward.
