Guys,
I figure its time to get you all involved in the never ending debate.
What shoulder do you prefer your ILB to take on ISO?
Do you want the outside shoulder so that it spills outside to numbers?
Or
Inside shoulder so it spills back to the other ILB?
The outside guys say by using outside shoulder you force the TB to bounce outside and give the DE,DT and DB force to mke the play.
They personally believe the wrong arm technique allows an undersized linebacker to make an aggressive play on the ISO.
They also believe that if you use the Inside shoulder and the other ILB is blitzing you are screwed.
On the other hand using the outside shoulder might get you this "Yeah, we also use our outside shoulder to spill the iso to the numbers and sideline. That way, the fans can see the ball carrier better as he runs for a touchdown. Ticket prices are high and the fans love touchdowns! "
The inside guys say "We keep the outside arm free to force it back to the backside backer. This is primarily because people can use formations to remove our OLB from the box. If we keep our inside arm free, we then could end up in a situation where the ball carrier hits the seam and like it was mentioned...he goes to the numbers...to the sideline...and to the house... If you play more straight man, I imagine you don't run into that problem as much. My instinct is that the ISO kills us when the playside backer lets himself get logged and the backside backer becomes a non-factor because the ball hits too wide. And you are correct, if you are blitzing your backside backer and they hit you with an iso...it could hurt bigtime. Rule of thumb...don't blitz inside backers unless you have a good scouting report"
