What are some techniques that you use to combat cut blocking? An opponent of ours will be using cut blocking as their primary pass pro on three step drops and I am looking for ideas of how to combat this and keep the pressure on their QB.
coach that is the most difficult block we see. here are the challenages-must know these in order to exicute. 3-step or hop step (gun), OL cut-slow down and keep the hands of DL DOWN. when it comes to a 3 step drop you must know playside and backside. the teams that we see that have a 3 step drop stay to their dominate side of the field (their right; our left). you must know when they will throw this (D/D), hash mark, and situation. once these are achieved if you have a tall end place him on the appropiate side of the field. i have been extreemly fortunite to have ends range from 6-5 to 6-3 over the last three years. if the route is a slant, out or hook get his butt in the passing lane. this is the first pass drill i do- from stance pop hands on a bag/dumby and look through for the seperation of the hands of the Q. once the hands seperate we get vertical----you must know have aggresive the cut block is-if very aggressive (tring to hurt a player) DON't have the player jump. if the OL is just hitting gaps not body parts then your player can get a little jump. the second step of this drill is to simulate the cut block with the bags-ride the hands down while looking for the seperation of the QB. the C.P. --fire hands out as OL goes down hands good down with him head stays UP-see seperation and distrupt passing lanes. it is hard as hell to get pressure on a 3-step. force the QB throw the ball up or softer or at an angle he is not used to throw from. remember what his job is ---get rid of ball on third step, if this doesn't happen he will get his butt chewed out. the only way you will get presure from your line on the QB is if the OL makes a mistake. i have had 4.6 guys and their spead is no match for a good 3 step drop. if the coverage is great the QB (what we see a lot of) just throws the ball away. outside blitz playside works well for us in getting the QB to hurry his timming and thus throwing the ball before the route is complete. i hope all of this helps it is a great question and i will be looking to see how others answer.
