Coaches how are you protecting in the in the 3 and 5 step game. In a earlier topic slide protection was discussed, is this used in all phases of straight drop and if so which way do you send the back? Also is it the easiest to teach?
you can max protect, i call it, have your backs attack the butt of your tackles an d get anyone outside of them make sure that they are right off the hip of the tackle. your line will step inside blocking their inside gap. like ohn a field goal or punt protect. this is great for 3 and 5 step routes. we weren't sacked once last year during this protection.
I change up blocking assignments from my backs, as I have the FB attack the backside and the TB attack the frontside, which is exactly the opposite of how it is usually done. My reasoning; as a right handed QB I got sick of being blindsided from the open side. I said that when I became a coach, I was going to do something about it. A FB is supposed to be a better blocker, usually than the RB. So, I switched up. It has always worked well for us. For a leftie QB, you block it just the opposite, of course.
