I am looking for ideas on running a youth summer football camp. I have 15 4th 5th and 6th graders from 9-4 one week, and the next week I have 30 7th, 8th and 9th grader from 9-4. I have a classroom available, with TV VCR, weight room, and field equipment. Any ideas about competitions, awards etc. Thanks, DC
I don't know how organized you are or what you plan for a daily schedule. My experience has been that short periods with many opportunities for complete behavioral cycles works best. You can have all kinds of fun/competitive games that allow each kid to win.
With the younger kids, I would suggest some fundamental speed and quickness training (flex runs, skipping, stretches, hand quick drills, get-up-and-run, cone races, etc). The older kids could participate in daily conditioning & workout drills, speed and agility training, position fundamentals, strength training and competitive games that emphasize speed and quickness.
All of your campers need balance and coordination exercises. These would be exercises that benefit coordination and joint stability. Sensory-motor skills such as balance beam, balance board, small ball reaction drills, mimi hurdles and others. The strength training component can involve weights and plyometrics. As you know, it is not necessary to lift a lot of weight but rather to have correct form and high reps.
I wouldn't hesitate to provide them with some good videos showing position skills, games and competitions requiring some of the above mentioned skills.
