DROPBACK PASS PROTECTION


7 MAN PROTECTION (3 & 5 STEP DROPBACK): We use the same protection RULES on both 3 & 5 step protection – the TECHNIQUE is slightly more aggressive on the 3 step drop game, as we fire into the defender. On the 5 step drop game – we begin the battle on the L.O.S. and give ground very grudgingly. Our basic scheme is a combination of “fan” blocking (big on big) on the callside, and “solid” blocking on the offside (primary reason for this is to give the Center help with the Nose – Off Guard will help Center if his man doesn’t come; also our RB doesn’t have to block a rushing lineman.

EXAMPLE: Callside = right. Y has a free release (if callside was left in this formation –H would have a free release).

ONSIDE TACKLE: Second man on L.O.S. outside Center (if he drops, help ON GUARD).

ONSIDE GUARD: First man on L.O.S. outside Center.

CENTER: On, Away (on or off L.O.S.). If LB & drops, help GUARDS.

OFFSIDE H or Y: “ “ “ “ “ “ Flare control – block man if he comes & release if he drops.

RUNNING BACK: Double read from 1st. LB from inside-out on callside, to man responsible for flat (SS in Cov. 3, CB in Cov. 2, OLB in 4-4, etc.). If both come – take the inside man. If one comes – take him. If neither comes – check out. C.P. Vs. a one LB defense (Pro 4-3 look, ETC.), double read from OLB to man responsible for flat.

8 MAN PROTECTION: Vs. teams that bring BOTH men that the RB is assigned to check, we put the callside H or Y on a “check-out” call on the outside man (usually man responsible for flat). If he comes – block him. If he drops – run your route (NOTE: check out on the run). This enables the RB to have a single read instead of a double read – otherwise (except for RB & callside H/Y) everything is exactly the same as 7 man protection.

6 MAN PROTECTION: Same as 7 man protection EXCEPT H or Y away from the call free releases.

NOTE: IN A 3 WR SET – CALL PROTECTION AWAY FROM Y!!!!!
