Coaches, can anyone help me with some ideas for defending 1-back,2 TE,2 WR? Mobile QB(option) and throws the ball. Big up front. Decent RB. Also adjustments for y-Trips. I'm looking for some different ideas for alignments for the front. Any help would be appreciated
Not gonna lie to ya... we've never faced either formation, but it does cause some problems and I'm curious to hear what the gurus have to say. I would probably base a lot of what we do on what type of options they run. Vs the double doubles, I would probably (and this is not based on experience whatsoever) play cover 2 with my flat players inverted as much as possible in the passing lane and really beat up the tight ends. I would do this because it's what we do anyway. I like to play man, but against option teams I believe the best thing to do is play cover 2 and mix up responsibilities as much as possible without making the kids learn a billion techniques. It seems like the best thing for us to do against TE trips is play man on the single TE side, but then we'd have to switch pitch responsibilities in our system. So I would probably try to play hard corner on #2 and still beat up the TEs. I like to make them beat us throwing deep and wide.
I liked your post. As we were discussing yesterday on another post, the sign of a good coach is his ability to make adjustments on the run. If you hadn't seen it before thats exactly what your forced to do.
Joepa (I think your handle has been taken for quiite a few years now, hasn't it? Ha) If your looking at Double tights your looking at a power formation par excellent! Make sure your DE's know how to take on a kickout, shed it and get to the ball carrier! Make sure your tackles know how to expect and shed a down block by the tites and dont get defeated by the combo blocks. Make certain your backers know their reads and responsibilities. I teach my DE's to jam the tites! If they engage before the kickout comes, it can't be made if they throw the TE back into the bubbled path of the FB or backside guard attempting to make the block! Your going to have at least 8 in the box, and sometimes 9 now days, and if you can't stop that run now, your in a world of hurt for sure. If you start stuffing them and spilling the ball to the perimeters, make certain your contains guys are well drilled on their responsibilities and their ability to tackle! Make sure your FS is welll drilled on his reads and how to come roaring down, UNDER CONTROL OF COURSE, and smack the ball carrier into the middle of next week! Good luck!
