What is the philosophy of running the slant-return route on several patterns instead of just a regular 3-step slant? Air Raid, at least in my study, seems to be one of the only offenses that makes use of this pattern.

Michigan wore this play out in the Rose Bowl vs USC. I like it because you have the slant throw if you have to throw it hot and it pulls the cornerback in making a cleaner throw to the corner route. If neither is there then the whip to the outside is about impossible to defend if run right.
