coaching points for qb reads

ISV vs. 50 front - Qb reads the PSDT. In the PSL, if he is in a 5 tech.= automatic give
4i tech= automatic pull
If he is in a straightup 4, the QB has to read him well. DT's are taught to grab cloth, thumbs up, and give the QB a fuzzy read. If your OT can't escape without being controlled, your in for a long night. The 4 tech will force the QB to make his decision by not committing to a clear read. If you give to the dive back, he will step into the hole and take the running lane. If you pull it, he will pursue. These kind of tackles know how to play the option! If the QB is having a hard time figuring him out, I just move to the OSV or power and have the TE block down on him, or throw the ball or whatever it takes to neutralize this threat. Rule of thumb: the QB is never wrong giving to the dive back in these situations. He may have made a better choice, but he is not wrong for giving.

MAJOR RULE OF THUMB- NO MATTER THE FRONT THE ISV READ IS ALWAYS THE FIRST MAN OUTSIDE OF THE B HOLE. In a 4 front, this is usually the PST as well. However, sometimes they will walk a LB up in there and if he is now the first man outside the B hole, he becomes the read.

OSV verses any front = QB read is very simply the last man on the LOS! Be it a DE, a walked up SS or OLB. Whoever your EMLOS is, he is the read.
