Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I've noticed that some of you have been in touch with the University of Minnesota re: their effective use of the Inside Zone. Can any of you give me the details of the WR Reverse thay run off it (I notice they FAKE the Reverse often, which opens up the cutback lanes for the Inside Zone itself. Need DETAILS of the play. THANKS!
You can go on the AFCA "articles" site for a GREAT lecture on Minnesota's Inside Zone. I am trying to get the Reverse off it. The Reverse is shown on the Joe Paterno "Coach Illustrated" site (under Glen Mason) BUT the diagram DOES NOT give exact blocking assignments.
They block it the same as zone. They run the play when the defense is flying to the zone action and the backside DE is crashing down on the zone action. Once they can establish they can get the defense to respect the reverse it plays into their hands to go back to the inside and outside plays. Defense cannot fly to the zone action and the backside DE must stay home.
We run the same action, except we scheme block the stretch play to the reverse side.
TE: Base reach or Down block on Ted call vs. 7 tech. T: Base reach, skip pull for outside lber or kick out DE on Ted call G: Base reach or down block on George Call so center can pull C: Pull and mirror ps lber. G: Zone scoop with bs tackle unless you hear George call, then make Peter call and skip pull for BS Lber. T: Cut most dangerous man inside
If anyone is interested in the playbook info on our inside and stretch play email me at jetsweep78@hotmail.com I have spent at least 3 days at the Univ. of Minnesota the past 2 springs.

I've got the AFCA article... and it is great. There is also a stellar article in the 1998 Nike COY manual... If you need it, send me an email, and I can photocopy it for ya. I also have a Joe Bugel run game video coming you might be interested in Oneback.
I'd love to be able to access the Coach Illustrated site. BUT... their registration forms don't allow me to have a Canadian address and I've emailed them several times over the last 5-6 months and they haven't bothered to respond at all. Any ideas? I'm not about to send my CC info to a bunch of people who can't respond to an email.
I'd really like to be able to access the Glen Mason info there... looks like awesome stuff.
Black Fly 73 - the Paterno site is good - but I've had a lot of problems recently pulling up the diagrams (on some articles - they say "click here for diagram", & it isn't working. As far as the Minnesota stuff - they SHOW backfield action on certain plays (Zone, reverse, etc) but do not have ANY details on the blocking. Suggest you contact Coach JD (who has a post next to yours) as he has offered to send info he got from Minn.
1. Regarding the Bugel Video: I'm not sure yet. I got it in a trade with someone from here, and it hasn't arrived yet. It was listed as the "Redskins Running Game". If you want I could let you know who that person is via email.
2. Coach Paterno site: I assume you're a member. Is there a phone number that you might know of when you access the site that one could call. I've really been keen on that site for some time.
I will look up and re-read my NIke COY article for you and see if Mason goes into the blocking rules.
I do have a video of the former ISU OC Steve Loney (now with the Vikings) describing the role of the O-line in the Inside Zone scheme. Loney was also at Minnesota with Glen Mason (and Browning, etc.) before he went to Iowa State. I think they're running the same schemes. In this video he shows some game clips of both ISU and Minnesota running the Inside Zone - with a reverse type action from a WR.
It looks like the blocking wouldn't change, and although he doesn't mention it I know some other schools run this reverse also. The WR motions from the Zone side and passes the QB just past the 'mesh' point of the Zone Handoff... and the blocking is the same... some schools I've seen then bring the QB around BS to chop the EMLOS (Michigan has done this - but their 'mesh' point is wider almost like a stretch plav - they've also done the handoff and then had the RB handoff for the reverse)... but often it is used when the EMLOS backside is crashing down hard and fast pursuing the inside zone action.
Black Fly 73: I used to talk with Steve Loney when he was on Joe Bugel's staff with the Arizona Cardinals. He was assistant )-Line coach under John Matsko (another FINE )-Line Coach, now with the Rams). They ALL zone block the SAME (Bugel, Hanifan, Matsko, Loney, etc.) - it's like a fraternity. They used the zone rules techniques I described to you in earlier posts. Thanks!
Coach Joe - I don't have the Iowa St stuff - Black Fly 73 does. Give me your phone number so I can call you RE: zone blocking Over & Under fronts (the way that Bugel, Hanifan, Matsko, Loney do, etc.). They are ALL essentially doing the following (I can't do more detail via email; without writing a BOOK - that's wht I need to TALK with you!!!!!).
1. Number defenders (like almost everyone does) #0, #1, #2, #3, #4, etc. 2. Center identifies "0" 3. Recognize blocking assignment thru covered/uncovered. 4. Make CALLS (as to who will ZONE with who) ONLY IF NECESSARY. I put all those calls on the site in answer to your "uestions for oneback" W....M....S E....T....T....E
OVER 0.0.C.0.0.Y H.................
Play going rt - BASIC way to block it would be for
H block #3 (E)
LT block #2 (W)
LG & CTR zone from Shade to M NOTE: IF shade a 2I - G may take him alone & CTR can zone with RG - but vs this front will end up on M anyway.
RG block #1 alone (MAY GET ZONE CALL FROM CTR)
RT & Y zone from S to DE.
UNDER W.......M E....T...T....E.S 0.0.C.0.0.Y H..................
H cutoff #3 (DE)
LT & LG zone from 3 to W
C block shade alone
RG & RT zone from DE to M
Y block S alone
THESE ARE STRAIGHT FROM THE 2000 RAMS PLAYBOOK (HANIFAN & MATSKO BLOCKING)
If you need any more on this PLEASE give me a phone number. My fingers are weary from typing. Bill
Coach Joe - one last thought & I'm out of town till late tonight.
I. UMBERS (ON INSIDE & OUTSIDE ZONE) C = #0; G = #1; T = #2; E = #3 are to give the O-Line a BASE man in case they MAN block.
II. COVERED/UNCOVERED tells the O-Line whether they ZONE OR NOT (EXAMPLE)
ZONE BLOCKING RULES:
A) (EVERYONE) IF YOU ARE UNCOVERED – ZONE WITH YOUR TEAMMATE TO PLAYSIDE. B) (EVERYONE) IF YOU ARE COVERED LOOK BACKSIDE - #1 IF YOUR TEAMATE BACKSIDE IS UNCOVERED - ZONE WITH HIM. #2 IF YOUR TEAMATE BACKSIDE IS COVERED – MAN BLOCK.
III. BLOCKING CALLS were used only if confusion & "gray areas" in the COVERED/UNCOVERED deal.
This is the way I was taught this type of blocking by Joe Bugel, Jim Hanifan, & John Matsko. They all did WELL with it.
Any further questions - call & give me a FAX NUMBER & I'll draw it vs OVER & UNDER & fax it to you.
Oneback's zone blocking stuff is essentially what ISU did (assume what the Vikes will do now)... Loney was Bugel's O-Line coach at Arizona...
Basically is is just the covered/uncovered rules. In the video I have Loney prefers the 'drop step', although he doesn't put any specific depth or width to it - depends on the defender. Each lineman is responsible for the playside gap - whoever the defender in that gap ends up being is who they'll block... with the covered/uncovered rules. Uncovered guys are taking a bit more of a drop and width... depending on the width of the defender.
Covered Linemen should aim for the CENTER of the playside number for eyes and hands... using the hands on the defender, no flippers. Uncovered linemen are also aiming for the center of the closest playside number.
I think one of the fundamental strengths of the Zone is that the rules can apply to all fronts... As far as I know they don't change the rules very much regarding the fronts. Likely they run it on a CWM (check with me) type basis.
Send me an email and I will try to get some notes (from my tape) to you this week about ISU's zone...
Alex Gibbs is a FANTASTIC teacher of Zone Blocking. Here is how HE teaches it:
ALEX GIBBS — WIDE ZONE & TIGHT ZONE:
OFFENSIVE LINE SPLITS = 18". OFF THE BALL WITH THEIR FINGERS ON THE CENTER'S SHOE LACES.
WIDE ZONE (18/19):
1. RB: LINE UP 7 ½-8 YARDS DEEP. DROP STEP & RUN ON TRACK FOR YOUR LANDMARK - THE BUTT OF THE TE (OR WHERE THE TE WOULD BE) — PRESS THE HOLE. READ HATS OF THE FIRST TWO MEN ON THE LOS COUNTING FROM OUTSIDE-IN (EXCLUDING Lbers). IF THE OUTSIDE MAN COMES IN — YOU GO OUT. IF THE OUTSIDE MAN GOES OUT — YOU GO IN & READ THE INSIDE MAN (RUN OFF HIM). RB IS PERMITTED ONLY ONE CUT, AND LIVE WITH IT! DETERMINE WHERE YOU WILL CUT BY THE TIME YOU GET TO ORIGINAL ALIGNMENT OF TE'S BUTT.
2. QB: COME OUT AT 4 (8) O'CLOCK & MAKE HANDOFF. FAKE BOOT AWAY.
3. O-LINE/UNCOVERED: UNCOVERED MAN ZONING TAKES AN OPEN (LEAD) DIAGONAL STEP WITH HIS PLAYSIDE FOOT FOR SHOULDER PAD OF HIS COVERED TEAMMATE. STAY ON TRACK & OVERTAKE DLM — DON'T BLOCK Lber UNLESS HE IS EVEN WITH YOUR INSIDE SHOULDER & THREATENING THE GAP.
4. O-LINE/COVERED: THE COVERED MAN STEPS WITH HIS PLAYSIDE FOOT & AIMS HIS FACE FOR THE OUTSIDE SHOULDER OF THE DLM (STAY ON HIS OUTSIDE ½, AND IF YOUR HALF GOES IN — TIGHTEN ON DOWN; IF YOUR HALF GOES OUT — WIDEN; STAY ON LEVERAGE POINT SO AS NOT TO ALLOW PENETRATION). NOTE: BLOCKING C.P. FOR ALL LINEMEN (ON BOTH ZONE PLAYS = ELBOWS TIGHT — CONTACT WITH TRIANGLE OF FOREHEAD & HANDS — GET HANDS INTO BREASTPLATE & GRAB CLOTH — LEVERAGE/DIP HIPS (DROP DOWN LOW).
5. BACKSIDE CUT BOCKS.
6. WR'S BLOCK THE SAFETIES (FORGET THE CORNERS).
TIGHT ZONE (14/15):
1. RB: FIRST STEP LIKE OUTSIDE ZONE & PLANT, CROSS OVER, & ROLL ON TRACK TO YOUR LANDMARK - THE OUTSIDE LEG OF THE ON G — PRESS THE LOS. READ THE HAT OF THE FIRST DLM OUTSIDE THE CENTER (NOT COUNTING A SHADE). IF HE GOES OUT OR DOESN'T MOVE — ROLLBACK READING THE HAT OF THE NEXT DLM INSIDE. IF HE GOES DOWN — READ THE HAT OF THE NEXT MAN ON LOS OUTSIDE OF HIM FOR YOUR CUT. BASICALLY — IF THE DLM YOU ARE READING DOESN'T PINCH INSIDE, ROLL BACK. DETERMINE WHERE CUT WILL BE WHEN YOU REACH HEELS OF ORIGINAL ALIGN OF ON G.
2. QB: COME OUT AT 5 (7) O'CLOCK & MAKE HANDOFF. FAKE BOOT AWAY.
3. O-LINE/UNCOVERED: (TECHNIQUES ARE TIGHTER ON TIGHT ZONE). UNCOVERED MAN ZONING TAKES 1 LEAD STEP WITH HIS PLAYSIDE FOOT AT HELMET OF DLM & IF HE WIDENS — GO UP ON Lber (DO NOT CROSSOVER WITH BACKSIDE FOOT IN TIGHT ZONE — BUT YOU DO IN WIDE ZONE). IF DLM COMES INSIDE FRONT HIM UP.
4. O-LINE/COVERED: THE COVERED MAN STEPS WITH HIS PLAYSIDE FOOT & AIMS FOR THE OUTSIDE # OF THE DLM.
5. BACKSIDE: ZONE BLOCK LIKE FRONTSIDE.
6. WR'S: SAME AS WIDE ZONE.
BLOCKING CALLS: SAME CALLS FOR "WIDE" & "TIGHT" BUT THE TECHNIQUES DIFFER AS ABOVE:
A) "COMBO" = ON TE & ON T (ON T UNCOVERED & ON TE COVERED). B) "SLIP" = ON T & ON G (ON G UNCOVERED & ON T COVERED) C) "GAP" = ON G & CENTER (NOSE OVER TO A POINT CENTER CAN'T HANDLE) D) "SLUG" = CENTER & OFF G (VS WEAK SHADE) E) "SCOOP" = OFF G & OFF T (3 TECHNIQUE ON OFF G) F) "ELEPHANT" = OFF T & OFF TE G) "??" = 3 MAN COMBO INTO REDUCTION BECAUSE HE DOESN'T FEEL ON G CAN HANDLE A 3 TECH. BY HIMSELF).
NOTE: MUST KNOW IF YOU ARE ZONING (HAVE ½ OF THE MAN) OR DO I HAVE HIM BASE (COVERED/UNCOVERED RULES).
IMPORTANT:
1. RUN AS MANY RUNS TO OPEN SIDE AS TIGHT END SIDE!!!!! 2. MAIN OBJECTIVE = "NO NEGATIVES" (MUST NOT GET LESS THAN 2 YARDS).
