Coaches, I have a big dilemma over double sessions or two-a-day practices. I have a coaching staff of four assistants and four young volunteers. We were planning to go from 8:00-10:30 AM and 5:30-8:00 PM for the first and second week of double sessions. However, my one assistant can only make three full days of the morning sessions and one of my other assistants recently told me that he will be there for the first half of the morning session and MOST of the evening sessions. In addition, my other assistant will not be there for at least one evening session during the second week of double sessions.
I was mentored by a succesful small school coach recently that has his double sessions run over a 4 1/2 hour period with a 30 min. break in between. He has had tremendous success doing this, but they don't do as much live contact as we do. My best thought right now would be to go from 4:00-8:30 with a 30 min. break in between sessions. The only issue I have doing this is that we hit more than most teams do in practice (it's a philosophical thing) and I don't know if the recovery time is enough.
Also, we only have 22 players on the roster in grades 9-12 (six more than last year, actually). Coaches, I need someone to take all the following facts into consideration and give me a big suggestion:
-I will only average two full-time assistants and four volunteers guaranteed at the morning session.
-We do the Oklahoma drill for 20 min. during defensive sessions and 20 min. live chutes drills w/ the Offensive Linemen/Tight Ends during offensive sessions.
- We have 22 players on the roster.
The responses on the board will help me make a more informed decision. I eagerly await your response.
