I am the special teams coordinator for my high school in Florida. We keep only about 30 to 40 kids on the varsity roster. I had a real problem during our spring season trying to keep track of personel. Kids who I had starting on certain teams would quit or get hurt and then I would have to stick a kid in there who lacked either the ability, desire or understanding to perform. I tried my best to keep a depth chart but by the end of the season it was so covered in pencil marks and cross outs that is was unreadable. Also, my head coach only gives me 30 minutes to practice special teams and I found it very difficult to work in those backups to get them reps. Our team places a real emphasis on the kicking game and I want them to perform well, but I need help in the efficiency department. Can anyone give me advice on organization of personel and practice time for backups? Thanks.
Hey Coach, I coached at Raines HS in Jacksonville for 8 years. We always had our #1's on all 5 special teams take the field in our pre-game walk thrus on Thursday nights. Our special teams coach always had a fresh depth chart ready at all times, your right in saying you can't use an old one with mark thrus. As soon as the #1's were listed at their exact position on whatever unit it was, he called for the #2's (backups) and had them take the field and stand directly behind the #1's. NO FOOLING AROUND, NO TALKING, ONLY CONCENTRATING ON WHO REPLACED WHO ON GAME NIGHT! With 30-40 players you will be faced with the dilemma of some on special teams are always on the field as starters. No matter where they are, they must keep their heads in the game and know where they belong if a special teams situation arises. When I got to be a HC, I instituted what I call a "neutral zone" on the side line. It is a 10 yd. space between the 45 yd. lines. NOBODY BUT SPECIAL TEAMS AND THE MEDICAL STAFF IS ALLOWED IN THERE DURING THE GAME. WE START EACH HALF BY MUSTERING THE PROPER UNIT, BE IT THE KICK OR RETURN TEAM, IN THE NEUTRAL ZONE. THE SPECIAL TEAM COACH AND THE SPECIAL TEAMS CAPT. EACH MAKE SURE WE HAVE 11 AND THEN WE GO TO THE FIELD WITH MILITARY PRECISION, WE DON'T JUST RUN ON THE FIELD LIKE A BUNCH OF LOOSE CHICKENS. By the way, the defense is always to my right of the neutral zone and the offense to my left, from the 30 to the 45 on each side. It is so much easier keeping the two units separated when you need certain personnel in the game immediately. ANOTHER RULE I HAVE ALWAYS EMPLOYED ON SPECIAL TEAMS IS THAT NO BACKUP EVER ENTERS THE GAME WITHOUT THE ST COACH'S KNOWLEDGE!!! IF A KID CAN'T GO, HE NEEDS TO REPORT TO YOU IMMEDIATELY AND NOONE ELSE AND TELL YOU DIRECTLY THAT HE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED ON SUCH AN SUCH A SPECIAL TEAM. HE IS NOT TO JUST LOOK AT HIS BACKUP AND SAY; GO IN MAN, I'M TIRED OR SICK OR HURT OR WHATEVER!!! DON'T EVER LET THEM START DOING THAT, BECAUSE IT WILL SPREAD LIKE CANCER!!! As the ST coach, you have to be in charge of your unit, not the kids. Like we always say, we run the asylum, not the inmates. Best of luck in your new assignment.

We are a 4A school in Pembroke Pines, FL...a suburb of Fort Lauderdale. We are a young school. This will only be our 4th season of varsity football. As a coaching staff, we are only in our second year and are working extra hard to turn around a very bad team with a very poor attitude (yes, it didn't take long for the previous staff to make a bad thing worse). I forwarded your email to me to my head coach. Thanks for the reply.
One year when I was in charge of having the proper personel on the field for special teams, I would quickly make a roll call on the sideline with them before sending them out. Both me and our players had to be quick to get it done, but is is possible and effective.
spoke with your HC recently. I hope y'all have got your special teams routines down pat, and that all is going well for you and the rest of the staff. I was going to come and be part of your staff, but the numbers were just unworkable. t any rate, keep'em going and hope you win'em all!
